Edward shines in Commonwealth cricket celebration

Cricket emerged as the flagship cultural and sporting highlight of the opening weekend of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) hosted in Antigua and Barbuda, blending elite youth athletic competition with high-profile diplomatic pageantry at one of the region’s most iconic sporting venues. The showpiece Under-23 T10 exhibition fixture held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound on Sunday saw the Commonwealth Caribbean XI deliver a dominant 43-run victory over the Wider Commonwealth XI, with 22-year-old Saint Lucian all-rounder Tarrique Edward delivering a match-defining two-way performance that stole the spotlight.

Batting first, the Caribbean side built a solid platform at the top of the order courtesy of steady contributions from Dominica’s team captain Stephan Pascal and 18-year-old local Antiguan talent Tanez Francis, who each notched 26 runs to lay a stable foundation for the middle order’s explosive acceleration. Edward then seized the momentum, smashing a game-high 34 runs off a mere 15 deliveries to propel his side to an imposing final tally of 118 runs for the loss of 5 wickets across their allotted 10 overs.

The former West Indies Under-19 standout followed up his fiery batting display with a masterclass in right-arm off-spin bowling, putting relentless pressure on the Wider Commonwealth XI’s batting lineup to help restrict their opponents to a meagre 75 runs for 8 wickets at the end of their innings. Edward finished with exceptional bowling figures of 2 wickets for just 10 runs, while Jamaican leg-spinner Tamarie Redwood amplified the pressure on the opposing side, tearing through the middle order to claim 3 wickets for only 9 runs.

Edward’s award-winning player-of-the-match performance caps off a remarkable upward trajectory for the young cricketer, who has progressed steadily through Saint Lucia’s domestic High Performance development pathway. His recent run of strong form aligns with a broader wave of success for emerging Saint Lucian cricket talent, with peers Shadrack Descarte and Keon Gaston earning recent call-ups to the West Indies ‘A’ squad, and Theo Edward securing a spot on the Windward Islands Volcanoes regional roster.

This special Sunday showcase fixture was jointly organised by Cricket West Indies and the Commonwealth Secretariat as a core component of the wider “One Commonwealth, One Team” community engagement initiative, and was preceded by a lighthearted ceremonial five-over exhibition match that featured active sitting Commonwealth Heads of Government taking to the pitch. The historic fixture carried additional regal significance, as the day’s proceedings opened with a ceremonial coin toss conducted in person by His Majesty King Charles III, with legendary West Indies cricket icon and Antiguan native Sir Vivian Richards serving as the honorary team manager for the event.
