Who is paying attention to COP30? Fossil fuel on fire!
The 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 30) concluded on Friday, November 21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil, after two weeks of intense negotiations. The event brought together global leaders, youth representatives, academics, and activists to address the escalating crisis of climate change. Despite three decades of discussions, the world continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of a warming planet, including intensified hurricanes and environmental degradation. Two primary strategies—mitigation and adaptation—remain central to the climate response. Mitigation focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while adaptation involves implementing policies to cope with climate impacts. However, progress on both fronts has been limited, particularly in curbing emissions. At COP 30, 83 nations, including many Caribbean island states, called for an end to fossil fuel use. This demand, however, faced resistance from countries with strong fossil fuel economies, such as Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. The draft agreement, titled ‘Global Mutirão: Uniting humanity in a global mobilisation against climate change,’ notably omitted any reference to transitioning away from fossil fuels, a key outcome of COP 28. As negotiations extended into overtime, tensions flared over the inclusion of fossil fuel language in the final text. Small island nations, while advocating for stronger climate action, appeared willing to compromise for increased financial support to adapt to climate impacts. The final outcome of COP 30 remains uncertain, but the urgency of the climate crisis underscores the need for decisive global action.

On November 16, the results of the first-ever ‘Confucius Institute Digital Application and Practice Case Collection Event’ were unveiled. This event, a collaborative effort between the Chinese International Education Foundation and the University of Science and Technology Beijing, highlighted groundbreaking digital initiatives within the global network of Confucius Institutes. Out of over 1,200 participating institutions, only 20 were honored with the ‘Demonstration Case Award.’ Among the distinguished recipients was the Confucius Institute at TAMCC, recognized for its innovative case titled ‘Integrated Audio-Visual Storytelling, Intelligent Communication: A Digital Communication Practice of the Confucius Institute.’ This case was selected as one of the ‘2025 Confucius Institute Digital Application and Practice Demonstration Cases,’ marking it as a global exemplar of digital innovation in Chinese language education. At the award ceremony, Zhao Lingshan, Vice Chair and Secretary-General of the Chinese International Education Foundation, presented the accolade to the TAMCC team. The winning case, themed ‘Smartly Empowered Civilisation,’ explores novel approaches to international Chinese education in the digital era. It addresses challenges such as limited outreach and low audience engagement by developing a digital model that integrates AI technology, short-video production, digital magazines, and multi-platform operations. This model has enabled the creation and dissemination of diverse content, reaching a broad audience with precision. Over the past two years, the institute has produced 13 theme songs for various events, including Marryshow Day at TAMCC and the 2025 World Chinese Conference, leveraging the fusion of music and visual media to enhance cultural communication. Additionally, the institute has released 20 bilingual promotional videos and launched the digital magazine ‘Four Seasons at the Confucius Institute,’ distributed across platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, Bilibili, and Xiaohongshu. These efforts have garnered nearly 200,000 views and over 5,000 interactions, showcasing the institute’s successful digital communication strategy. The institute has also been awarded the ‘Outstanding Organisation Award’ in the HSK Short Video Competition for two consecutive years, further cementing its reputation as a leader in digital innovation. The ‘Four Seasons of the Confucius Institute’ magazine has become a vital resource for Grenadians to learn about Chinese culture, offering a replicable model for international Chinese education. This award underscores the high regard for the Confucius Institute at TAMCC’s achievements in digital development and cultural communication. Moving forward, the institute plans to expand its ‘Integrated Audio-Visual Storytelling’ project, further integrating AI into teaching and cultural activities, and contributing to the high-quality development of China-Grenada cultural exchange and international Chinese education.

When one person holds everything
In workplaces across Grenada, there is often one individual who becomes the linchpin of operations. This person, often referred to as the ‘Single Point of Failure’ (SPOF), holds critical knowledge, fixes issues, and ensures smooth functioning. While their reliability is invaluable, it also poses significant risks. When too much information is concentrated in one person, the entire operation becomes vulnerable to disruptions if they are unavailable. This issue is not a reflection of the employee’s effort but rather a structural problem that affects both the business and the individual. For businesses, the absence of a SPOF can lead to stalled operations, lack of clear handover processes, and difficulties in training new staff. For the employee, it can result in increased stress, burnout, and limited career progression. The solution lies in documentation. Contrary to fears that documentation might phase out roles, it actually validates an employee’s contributions, reduces pressure, and enables growth. Documentation makes expertise visible, reduces the need for constant availability, and fosters teamwork. Employers in Grenada are encouraged to document core tasks, cross-train employees, and integrate documentation into the work culture. This approach not only strengthens the workplace but also shifts businesses from reactive to proactive strategies. Documentation is not about replacing employees but about recognizing and preserving their knowledge. By building systems that support employees rather than relying on individual heroes, businesses can achieve sustainable success. Paperclip, a strategic HR consultancy in Grenada, specializes in helping organizations build resilient, people-centered systems through HR audits, policy development, and leadership support.

Opposition MP: Constituency allowance cannot be used for self-indulgence
In a significant move to ensure transparency and accountability, Grenada’s House of Representatives has implemented stringent measures for the disbursement and utilization of constituency allowances. Starting January 2024, Members of Parliament (MPs) receiving the EC$10,000 monthly constituency allowance are required to submit verifiable bills and receipts to Parliament, detailing how the funds were allocated for constituency activities. This development was highlighted by Dr. Clarice Modeste, an Opposition Member representing St. Mark, during the adjournment of the 19 November parliamentary session. Dr. Modeste emphasized that the allowance is strictly for constituency purposes and is deposited into dedicated constituency accounts, not personal bank accounts. MPs must also present quarterly expenditure reports to ensure public funds are used appropriately. This initiative follows the approval of a separate EC$5,000 increase in personal allowance by the House Committee on 22 November 2023. The measures aim to foster greater public trust and ensure that taxpayer money is utilized effectively for community development.
