On the morning of October 31, 2025, a brazen, daylight shooting unfolded in the residential neighborhood of Ladyville, Belize District, leaving 31-year-old local resident Herbert Belloso dead and sending ripples of public safety alarm across the tight-knit community. The sequence of events, as outlined by Belize Police Department ASP Stacy Smith, began when a blue Chevrolet Equinox pulled up near Belloso’s mother’s store on Marage Road, a short walk from his own home on Compassion Lane. Three male suspects exited the SUV, two of whom were visibly armed, prompting Belloso to attempt to flee on foot. The assailants chased him down the street and opened fire, inflicting fatal injuries before fleeing the scene in the waiting vehicle. This high-profile killing has cast a spotlight on a rising tide of violent rivalries that local law enforcement confirms are unfolding both between and within different social groups across Ladyville. Court records show Belloso had a 2022 prior conviction for drug trafficking, when he pleaded guilty to possession of nearly 29 grams of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, earning a two-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine. Most notably, he had been detained for formal questioning just one week prior to his death, in connection with the October 23, 2025, fatal shooting of Vista Del Mar construction worker Darrell Thompson. At the time of Belloso’s murder, police had not gathered sufficient evidence to press any formal charges against him in that Thompson killing, though he remained listed as a person of interest in the open case. While investigators have not formally confirmed a direct link between the two homicides, they are prioritizing the retaliation theory as a key line of inquiry. In response to the escalating cycle of violence, authorities have already enacted a State of Emergency covering a wide swath of rural Belize communities stretching from Lord’s Bank through Los Lagos, Lake Gardens and Vista Del Mar. As of press time, the blue Equinox and the three unidentified gunmen remain at large, and forensics teams have not yet verified initial witness reports that a shotgun was used to kill Belloso. The police department has launched a targeted ongoing operation to seize unregistered high-powered firearms from local streets in a bid to de-escalate the brewing rivalry conflicts before more fatal attacks occur.
