In a historic step to transform national eye healthcare access, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has officially launched the Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative, a multi-phase program that will deliver free vision care and corrective eyewear to thousands of citizens while building a sustainable framework for long-term vision health across generations.
Conceived by Prime Minister Gaston Browne and rolled out by the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs in collaboration with global non-profit organization RestoringVision, the initiative had its formal launch Thursday at the Villa Community Center. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Browne framed the program as a reflection of his administration’s core pledge to make high-quality healthcare accessible to every resident, stating unequivocally that “vision is a human right.”
Under the program’s first phase, set to kick off July 31, 25,000 free reading glasses will be distributed to adults aged 40 and older. Eligible residents can access free vision screenings at the Villa Community Center and Gray’s Green Community Center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the first two weeks of the program, after which services will expand to additional community locations across the country. Individuals who meet screening criteria will receive complimentary reading glasses on-site.
Health Minister Michael Joseph called the initiative nothing less than “the renaissance of vision care in Antigua and Barbuda,” noting that it opens a new era of proactive eye health for the nation and reaffirms the government’s commitment to supporting all citizens in living healthy, productive, and independent lives. Joseph credited Prime Minister Browne for championing the project from its earliest planning stages, highlighting that Browne’s leadership was instrumental in uniting cross-sector partnerships, securing critical resources, and building the collective commitment needed to turn the vision into a working program.
Joseph also extended public gratitude to RestoringVision for its partnership, emphasizing that the collaboration demonstrates how aligned action between national governments and global mission-driven organizations can deliver tangible, life-changing improvements to community well-being. While many may view reading glasses as a small, simple intervention, Joseph explained their impact extends far beyond clearer sight. “To some, this may appear to be a simple intervention. But for the individual whose world immediately comes back into focus, it is far more than a pair of glasses. It is restored confidence. It is renewed independence. It is the ability to continue working, caring for family, participating in community life and enjoying the simple moments that make life meaningful. That is the true impact of good public health,” he said.
Unlike one-off donation programs, the Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative is built as a long-term investment in national public health. The first phase of eyewear distribution is just the opening step of a broader strategy to strengthen comprehensive eye health services across Antigua and Barbuda. Already, the Ministry of Health is preparing for the program’s second phase, which will expand access to full comprehensive eye exams and distribute 8,000 custom prescription eyeglasses to residents with more complex vision correction needs that cannot be met with standard reading glasses.
Looking further ahead, the ministry also plans to roll out school-based vision screening programs to catch undiagnosed vision problems in children early, when intervention can prevent long-term impacts on learning and development. Joseph emphasized that proactive, early investment in preventive care is the foundation of building a healthier nation, noting: “This is how we build a healthier nation—not by responding only when problems arise, but by investing in prevention, early intervention and accessible healthcare for every stage of life.”
The launch ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Walton Webson, Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Keisha McGuire, Chief Global Affairs Officer at RestoringVision. Both speakers highlighted the critical role of cross-border partnerships in advancing global public health and praised Antigua and Barbuda for its proactive leadership in expanding equitable access to vision care for all residents. Dignitaries in attendance included Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration Minister E.P. Chet Greene, Permanent Secretaries Stacey Gregg-Paige and Edson Joseph, and senior technical leadership from the Ministry of Health, Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, and the Medical Benefits Scheme. The Ministry of Health also formally recognized the work of frontline healthcare providers, nurses, clinic teams, and community volunteers whose coordinated efforts have made the nationwide rollout possible.
The administration is urging all eligible residents aged 40 and older to take advantage of this free public health opportunity, and encouraging citizens to share information with older family members, neighbors, and friends who may benefit from the program. To date, the Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative stands as one of the largest sustained investments in eye health in Antigua and Barbuda’s history. Beyond delivering clearer sight to thousands of adults in the immediate term, the program is laying the groundwork for stronger, more accessible vision care that will support healthier, more productive communities for decades to come.
