Late on Wednesday evening, a devastating blaze completely engulfed the public O.S. Wonoredjo school facility in the town of Moengo, located in Suriname’s remote Marowijne District, local emergency response authorities confirmed. First responders from the Moengo police precinct, alongside municipal fire crews and regional public safety agencies, were dispatched to the scene after reports of the school fire emerged shortly before 10:30 p.m. local time on November 4. At the time of initial reporting, investigators have not released any verified details about the full scope of structural damage to the school campus, nor have they identified a potential ignition source for the inferno. In a separate but nearly concurrent incident, a multi-unit residential property on Albina’s Kawvalweg, a short distance from the Moengo school fire site, was also fully consumed by flames that same night. The split dwelling, which had been converted to house two separate apartment units, was reduced to total rubble, though emergency officials confirmed no residents or first responders suffered injuries in that residential blaze. Investigators from the Marowijne District police’s arson unit noted that the root cause of both fires remains unaccounted for, and they have not yet found any tangible evidence linking the two back-to-back incidents to a coordinated act of arson or shared trigger.
