Subregional youth parliaments engage in dialogue with Governor General and Lady Williams

On October 19, 2026, Government House in Antigua and Barbuda played host to a landmark courtesy call, bringing together young parliamentary leaders from across the Eastern Caribbean for a high-profile meeting as part of the 2026 Eastern Caribbean Youth Parliament Network (ECYPN) program. Welcoming the delegation were Sir Rodney Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, and his spouse Lady Williams, who also serves as president of the regional philanthropic organization the Halo Foundation.

The cohort of young delegates arrived in Antigua and Barbuda two days prior to the meeting, on October 17, traveling from four separate Eastern Caribbean jurisdictions: Antigua and Barbuda itself, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. The gathering formed a key milestone in the ECYPN’s regional youth parliamentary initiative, which is designed to nurture grassroots leadership and strengthen cross-island cooperation among emerging political voices.

During the meeting, the visiting youth delegation received formal commendation from Their Excellencies for their consistent dedication to expanding youth civic participation, building next-generation leadership capacity, and driving inclusive sustainable development across the Eastern Caribbean region.

Lady Williams, addressing the assembled young parliamentarians, outlined a set of core values that she urged all elected youth representatives across the Caribbean to embed in their leadership practice. These non-negotiable qualities, she stressed, include unwavering honesty, full transparency in public office, and a sincere, abiding respect and affection for all fellow citizens.

In a striking re-framing of common narratives around youth political engagement, Lady Williams emphasized that young people today are not merely candidates being groomed for future leadership roles. Instead, she argued, they are already positioned to deliver tangible, positive change across three critical areas: the region’s natural environment, its evolving economy, and its standards of public and social ethics. To back this commitment to supporting current youth leadership, Lady Williams announced that the Halo Foundation would issue a monetary grant to the Youth Parliamentary Association of Antigua and Barbuda, to help the group cover operating costs for its ongoing regional programming.

Following formal remarks, the youth parliamentarians took part in an open question-and-answer session with Their Excellencies, exchanging thoughtful perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing young Caribbean leaders and walking away with actionable, insightful guidance that deepened the value of the gathering. The courtesy call concluded with a group photo opportunity, preserving a moment that encapsulated the shared goals of regional unity and youth-driven progress at the heart of the ECYPN initiative.

The 2026 ECYPN program is set to continue the following day, October 20, with a wide-ranging regional parliamentary debate centered on an open policy motion.
