Secret Beach Set to Trade Generators for Grid Power

Nestled on Ambergris Caye, one of Belize’s most coveted island getaways, Secret Beach has exploded in popularity in recent years, emerging as a bustling hub for tourists and local visitors alike. For all its postcard-perfect tropical scenery and thriving beachside business scene, however, the area has long grappled with a persistent, foundational infrastructure gap: a lack of access to consistent, national electricity service. For decades, every restaurant, shop and accommodation at Secret Beach has relied on pricey, polluting fuel-powered generators to keep operations running — a burden that has eaten into profit margins and disrupted the laid-back beach atmosphere with constant noise. That chapter is set to close, thanks to a new collaborative infrastructure project between two of Belize’s leading public entities.

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), the country’s primary power provider, and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), the government body responsible for advancing the nation’s $1.8 billion tourism industry, have announced a partnership to extend the national power grid all the way to Secret Beach. Once completed, the project will connect every existing and future business, as well as local residents, to the national grid, delivering a far safer, more consistent supply of electricity than the makeshift generator-dependent system currently in place.

The shift away from fuel generators is expected to deliver a cascade of benefits for the area. Beyond eliminating the constant droning noise that has long annoyed visitors and operators alike, the transition will cut steep monthly fuel costs for local businesses, drastically reducing their operating overhead. It will also cut down on the carbon emissions and local air pollution generated by constant generator use, aligning the destination with Belize’s broader sustainable tourism goals.

Perhaps one of the most transformative changes will come after dark. For years, unreliable, low-output power has limited after-sunset operations at Secret Beach, forcing many businesses to close early to conserve generator fuel. With consistent grid power, businesses will be able to extend their operating hours, welcoming more evening visitors and boosting overall revenue. Improved street and commercial lighting will also boost public safety for pedestrians and beachgoers, making the area a more attractive destination for after-work gatherings and nighttime events.

Industry analysts and local leaders project that the new infrastructure will act as a catalyst for long-term economic growth in the area. Reliable power is a core requirement for new investment, from larger resort developments to new small businesses owned by local entrepreneurs. By removing this key barrier, the project is expected to unlock new opportunities for job creation and expanded economic activity in one of Ambergris Caye’s fastest growing regions.

As the project moves into the implementation phase, BEL and BTB have emphasized that community engagement will remain a top priority. The agencies confirmed that they will conduct ongoing consultations with local residents and business owners throughout the construction process, to address concerns, minimize disruption to daily operations, and ensure the final design meets the needs of the community that calls Secret Beach home.
