The Caribbean cultural community is preparing to bid a final, celebratory farewell to one of its most iconic figures: calypso trailblazer Slinger Francisco, universally known as The Mighty Sparrow, who passed away at 91 at his New York home on September 27. Renowned arranger Carl “Beaver” Henderson, who is leading the planning of the national tribute event, confirmed the full lineup of performers and logistical details in an interview with local outlet *Express*, outlining a program packed with heartfelt performances from across the regional entertainment spectrum.
Headlining the tribute opening at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain this Friday is award-winning soca star Destra Garcia, who will deliver a moving performance of the beloved gospel hymn *His Eye is on the Sparrow*, a nod to the late icon’s stage name. Another major name in soca, Machel Montano, is set to deliver a special curated tribute, with gospel vocalist Sean Daniell also scheduled to take the stage. Unfortunately, celebrated calypso icon David Rudder has had to withdraw from the lineup after a sudden family loss: his aunt passed away unexpectedly, forcing him to return to his home in Canada. Henderson extended sincere condolences to Rudder and his family amid the cancellation.
The two-hour tribute program will center on some of Sparrow’s most beloved and culturally significant hits, including fan favorites *Education*, *Federation*, and *Memories*. To bring the late artist’s discography to life, three ensembles – the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Police Band, and D Razor Sharpe Band – will back the guest performers. Henderson noted that curating a two-hour set from Sparrow’s enormous discography was a deliberate choice, as a full retrospective of his decades-long career would stretch on for many times that length. Rehearsals for the event are already well underway, and additional surprise guest artists are expected to make appearances, even with a tight timeline that cannot accommodate every performer who wanted to take part. The closing of the tribute will feature a special medley accompanied by the original Police Band that performed with Sparrow early in his career, a nostalgic nod to his roots in the industry.
Henderson shared that the event has received unprecedented cross-sector support, starting from the highest level of government. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who Henderson revealed is a self-described fan of The Mighty Sparrow, has thrown full government backing behind the tribute to ensure the cultural icon receives a fitting send-off. Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin, the Francisco family, and dozens of participating artists have all aligned to deliver the event, with Henderson saying all stakeholders “are singing from the same hymn book” centered on honoring Sparrow’s irreplaceable legacy. NAPA’s leadership team and local broadcaster TTT are also partnering on production.
In addition to the main tribute program, the national farewell will include a number of public events to allow fans to pay their respects. Sparrow’s body will lie in repose for public viewing: first at the South Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and then at NAPA this Wednesday. Per an explicit request from the Francisco family, members of the public are asked to refrain from taking photographs or recording video during the public viewings out of respect for the family’s privacy.
On Friday, the formal national procession will kick off at 10 a.m. at Port of Spain’s Independence Square, traveling along Frederick Street before the formal tribute gets underway. The procession and pre-tribute celebrations will include a full showcase of Trinidad and Tobago’s native cultural traditions, featuring performances from steel orchestras, moko jumbie stilt walkers, traditional masquerade performers, and dedicated tribute installations. For members of the public who cannot fit inside NAPA for the main tribute, the Culture Ministry has announced arrangements for viewing at the Grand Stand at Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, with additional logistical details to be released in the coming days. The Mighty Sparrow is survived by his wife Margaret, his children Michelle, Karen, Richard, and Sancho, and multiple generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
