Guyana’s political landscape is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures, Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, the long-serving former leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), who passed away on Sunday at a Georgetown city hospital at the age of 79.
In an official statement released following his death, the PNCR remembered Corbin as a shrewd, dedicated strategist whose contributions to the party and national politics leave an irreplaceable void. “Comrade Corbin’s death is an irreplaceable loss to the PNCR and he will surely be missed,” the party wrote, noting that Corbin had remained an active advisor to the party throughout his period of declining health.
Over a decades-long political career, Corbin held multiple senior roles across Guyana’s government and opposition, serving stints as Parliamentary Secretary, Cabinet Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and ultimately Leader of the Opposition. Beyond his government posts, he also served for years as PNCR General Secretary, and was a former national chairman of the Young Socialist Movement (YSM), the party’s youth wing. The PNCR highlighted Corbin’s enduring loyalty, discipline, and relentless work ethic, noting that even as he built a successful professional career as a practicing lawyer, he never stepped back from his commitments to the party he served for so long.
Corbin’s most enduring political legacy is widely recognized as his early and enthusiastic advocacy for coalition politics. The party credited him with being the driving force that guided the PNCR into collaborative opposition alliances, laying the groundwork for the formation of the APNU+AFC Coalition that went on to win the 2015 Guyanese general election. Alongside the late Rupert Roopnaraine, former co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Corbin is counted as one of the original founding architects of the APNU coalition.
The PNCR closed its tribute by extending its deepest condolences to Corbin’s surviving family: his wife Carol, his children, and all his extended relatives, colleagues, and friends, offering prayers for comfort and strength for all those mourning his passing.
