AILA: New technological system makes baggage handling more efficient

Las Américas International Airport (AILA) has marked a major milestone in its ongoing terminal modernization initiative, bringing the first phase of its cutting-edge new Baggage Handling System (BHS) online. The automated infrastructure revolutionizes outbound baggage processing by streamlining inspection, sorting, and end-to-end traceability workflows, representing one of the most significant technology upgrades at the Dominican airport in recent years.

Luis José López, communications director for Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), the operator of AILA, confirmed that the first phase of the BHS project entered active service in early June, covering the southern section of the passenger terminal. This rollout is the first of two major planned phases that will ultimately upgrade the airport’s entire baggage processing network.

Under the new automated system, the entire journey of a checked bag begins the moment a passenger drops off their luggage at a check-in counter. From check-in, suitcases enter a connected network of motorized conveyor belts, high-precision sensors, digital bag tag readers, and integrated security inspection hardware. This connected ecosystem automatically routes each piece of luggage to its designated sorting zone, before it is transferred to the aircraft for loading.

A core defining feature of the new BHS is its robust end-to-end baggage identification and monitoring capability. By digitizing tracking workflows, the system drastically reduces reliance on labor-intensive manual handling, enabling far more efficient management of baggage traffic throughout the terminal. This not only cuts down on processing times but also lowers the risk of human error such as misrouted or lost luggage.

The upgraded infrastructure also integrates 360-degree scanning security inspection technology, engineered to both strengthen airport security protocols and speed up overall baggage processing. Complementing this scanning capability, the platform leverages artificial intelligence tools to generate real-time pre-alerts for high-priority or irregular baggage, marking a key step forward in the airport’s transition to data-driven, fully automated operational processes.

Industry experts note that modernizing baggage infrastructure is a critical investment for international airports, as efficient baggage processing underpins coordination across every stage of air operations—from passenger check-in through security, sorting, and final flight departure. Delays or disruptions in baggage workflows can cascade into delayed departures and degraded passenger experiences, making upgraded automated systems a high priority for growing airport hubs.

Aerodom’s work on the BHS project is already advancing to the second phase, which will see the automated infrastructure expanded across more of the terminal. This next stage will complete the full transformation of AILA’s baggage handling operations, rolling out the automated system to all outbound processing areas.

The BHS upgrade is just one part of a broader, comprehensive technology transformation across AILA. The airport has also rolled out upgrades to other passenger-facing services, including the launch of version 2.0 of its online parking payment platform, designed to cut down on wait times and improve the end-to-end travel experience for visitors.

With the launch of the first phase of the BHS, AILA now has the automated infrastructure needed to accommodate growing air traffic volumes. The upgrade delivers measurable gains in processing capacity, end-to-end traceability, baggage security, and operational efficiency—key capabilities that are increasingly essential for managing a busy international airport in the modern era of air travel.
