Liberty Latin America Accelerates Cloud Transformation And ICT AdoptionThrough Strategic Collaboration With AWS

In a significant move to propel digital modernization across Latin America and the Caribbean, Liberty Latin America (LLA) has entered into a comprehensive five-year strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This alliance is strategically designed to address the region’s unique technological challenges, particularly concerning data sovereignty, regulatory compliance, and the urgent need for IT modernization.

The partnership is structured around three core pillars to drive innovation. Firstly, LLA will deploy AWS Outposts, dedicated on-premises infrastructure, within its own facilities. This critical step allows the company to deliver robust cloud capabilities while ensuring sensitive data remains within specific national borders, directly tackling stringent data residency mandates prevalent in Latin American markets.

Secondly, LLA will undertake a large-scale migration of over 500 customer workloads and internal systems to AWS. Utilizing the AWS Transform program, this initiative aims to modernize the company’s entire tech stack, making it AI-ready. This internal transformation simultaneously empowers LLA to offer enhanced, secure B2B cloud services to enterprise clients grappling with similar modernization hurdles.

The third component involves an expansion of AWS cloud infrastructure to the edge of LLA’s extensive network and data center operations. This deployment will provide ultra-low-latency applications and localized data processing, catering to the accelerated cloud adoption needs of vital sectors including telecommunications, financial services, healthcare, and government.

Executive leadership from both companies highlighted the transformative potential of the collaboration. Balan Nair, President and CEO of Liberty Latin America, stated that the partnership provides the technology foundation organizations need to move faster without compromising on security or reliability, enabling transformation ‘at the speed the market now demands.’

Jan Hofmeyr, VP of Telecommunications at AWS, framed the agreement as indicative of a broader industry shift, noting that telecom providers are evolving from mere connectivity suppliers into comprehensive digital transformation partners. The fusion of LLA’s deep regional expertise with AWS’s cloud and AI capabilities creates a trusted partner for enterprises seeking growth.

Echoing this sentiment, Aamir Hussain, SVP and Chief Technology Officer at LLA, emphasized that the collaboration would offer B2B customers ‘an unmatched service’ with secure, flexible, and scalable solutions. Paula Bellizia, VP of AWS LATAM, added that the partnership is focused on helping enterprises adopt digital technologies to better serve their communities and build for long-term growth.

The market has responded positively, with regional customers like Telered expressing confidence in the alliance. Pastor Marcelino, Vice President of Technology and Transformation at Telered, cited the combination of AWS’s infrastructure and LLA’s regional understanding as a ‘powerful foundation for our digital future,’ providing the security and expertise needed to compete effectively.
