Ghana’s president joins Commonwealth leaders in Antigua and Barbuda

The 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) kicked off in St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, under the official guiding theme “Accelerating Partnership and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”, bringing together leaders from 56 member nations to deliberate on cross-border economic collaboration, fairer trade framework optimization, and actionable pathways to advance inclusive sustainable development across the bloc. For Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, this two-day diplomatic gathering marks his first major multilateral summit engagement since he secured re-election to office in the December 2024 general election. Throughout his stay in St. John’s, Mahama is scheduled to conduct a series of one-on-one bilateral closed-door talks with multiple fellow heads of state and government from Commonwealth member states. These bilateral sessions are designed to map out overlapping mutual priorities, unlock untapped trade and investment opportunities, and broaden and deepen Ghana’s mutually beneficial economic partnerships across the diverse Commonwealth network, spanning sectors from green infrastructure and digital innovation to agricultural value chain development and youth employment.
