From Bottle Caps to International Flags: Antiguan Students Showcase Dynamic Sustainability Display for the Historic Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting

As Antigua and Barbuda makes history hosting its first ever Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from November 1 to 4, a one-of-a-kind public art installation crafted from nearly 84,047 discarded plastic bottle caps is turning heads at the summit and across the island, merging environmental action, community participation, and global diplomatic visibility. Spearheaded by local Antiguan non-profit Good Humans 268 Inc. with financial and logistical backing from the Sandals Foundation, the landmark sustainability project carries a total estimated value of over 40,500 Eastern Caribbean dollars. Far from a small-scale creative effort, the initiative mobilized broad cross-sector community engagement: 698 primary and secondary school students, 54 teachers representing 39 different educational institutions, plus 35 additional local volunteers dedicated to material sorting, design, and final on-site assembly contributed to bringing the vision to life. Over 15 total working days split between five pre-production preparation sessions at the John Hughes community workspace and 10 full days of hands-on construction, participants hand-built and hand-painted 55 national flags representing every Commonwealth member nation across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific, paired with a dedicated custom display flag for host country Antigua and Barbuda to complete the full set of 56 emblems. The public rollout of the artwork is strategically planned to reach both visiting CHOGM delegates and local residents: a large, eye-catching iteration of the Antigua and Barbuda bottle cap flag is already on display at V.C. Bird International Airport to greet arriving international dignitaries, while the full line of 56 recycled flag bunting will be strung along the Queen Elizabeth Highway for the duration of the summit. Once CHOGM concludes, the entire collection of artworks will be relocated to six high-traffic public sites across the island to extend its public education impact long after global leaders depart. Joshuanette Francis, President of Good Humans 268, emphasized that the project’s core purpose extends far beyond decorative appeal. “While Antigua welcomes leaders from every corner of the Commonwealth, we wanted to craft a tangible, memorable symbol that tells the world sustainability is not an afterthought here—it is woven into our national identity,” Francis explained. “Our long-term goals include pushing for updated national waste management legislation, empowering every local resident to take active ownership of protecting our shared community and natural environment, and making a powerful statement that discarded waste can be reborn as something beautiful, to inspire households, schools, and businesses across the region to adopt more circular, low-waste practices.” This bottle cap flag initiative is the latest in a growing portfolio of joint environmental projects between the Sandals Foundation and Good Humans 268, a youth-focused recycling advocacy group that has rolled out waste reduction programs in Antiguan schools since its founding in 2023. Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts, noted that the project aligns perfectly with the organization’s mission to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards. “This is far more than an art installation: it is an investment in raising a generation of Caribbean young people who understand that no small sustainable action is wasted—every single bottle cap diverted from a landfill, every item recycled, adds up to build a far more climate-resilient future for our islands,” Clarke said. “We are deeply proud to partner with Good Humans 268 to bring this vision to life.” The 2026 CHOGM summit, expected to draw roughly 5,000 visiting attendees including heads of government, cabinet ministers, business leaders, civil society representatives, and youth delegates, is centered on advancing collective action for climate-resilient, inclusive sustainable development across all Commonwealth member states.
