Gibraltar’s deputy chief minister to attend Commonwealth events in Antigua and Barbuda

Gibraltar’s Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia is set to depart for Antigua and Barbuda in the coming weeks to represent the British Overseas Territory at the highly anticipated Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), slated to run from November 1 to 4, 2024. Stepping in on behalf of Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Garcia will take on key speaking and collaborative roles across the summit’s official agenda: he will join two closed-door high-level roundtable dialogues focused on shared Commonwealth priorities, and sit as a featured panellist during a public plenary session alongside sitting heads of government and senior political leaders from across the 56-nation bloc. A statement released by the Government of Gibraltar emphasized that all discussions Garcia will participate in align closely with policy areas where the 6.8-square-kilometer territory has accumulated tangible, real-world expertise, positioning it to deliver targeted, constructive contributions to collective Commonwealth action. Located at the strategic southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, the rocky territory sits at the narrow entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, sharing a land border with Spain. As a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar maintains formal engagement with Commonwealth member states and affiliated multilateral bodies both through its direct bilateral outreach and via the United Kingdom’s permanent membership in the intergovernmental association. Beyond high-level political representation, Gibraltar has assembled a multi-stakeholder delegation to ensure full participation across CHOGM’s associated satellite events: prominent local business leader Jared Peralta will represent the territory at the parallel Commonwealth Business Forum to advocate for cross-Commonwealth trade and investment partnerships for Gibraltar’s financial services and tourism sectors, while two emerging young community leaders, Haylee Pincho and Aditya Dhanwani, will attend the Commonwealth Youth Forum to amplify the priorities of Gibraltar’s young population in global youth-focused policy discussions.
