PM Briceño Welcomes Direct Flights From Europe

After decades of cross-administration efforts to connect Central America’s Belize directly to European travel markets, the small Caribbean nation has secured a landmark aviation deal that promises to reshape its tourism-driven economy. Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed this week that Germany’s Discover Airlines will launch twice-weekly seasonal direct flights between Frankfurt International Airport and Belize City starting December 16, 2027. The service will run through mid-April 2028, aligning perfectly with Belize’s peak winter and dry travel season, when demand for tropical getaways from cold-climate European regions hits its annual high.

Flights are scheduled to operate every Thursday and Sunday, opening a streamlined new entry point for not only German tourists but also visitors connecting from across the European continent and neighboring regions. For Belize, a country whose economy relies heavily on international tourism as a core source of employment and foreign revenue, the new air route represents a policy win years in the making. Prime Minister Briceño emphasized that successive Belizean governments have prioritized securing a direct European air connection for decades, crediting the current administration’s Ministry of Tourism led by Minister Mahler and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) for delivering on the long-sought goal.

“This is a major milestone for our country,” Briceño stated, noting that the direct link eliminates the need for European travelers to go through time-consuming connecting flights via the United States or other regional hubs, a common barrier that has deterred many potential visitors for years. The prime minister added that he expects the new service to deliver a measurable boost to Belize’s international arrival numbers, supporting local businesses ranging from hotels and tour operators to restaurants and craft industries across the country. The BTB has framed the deal as proof of Belize’s growing appeal as a premium tropical travel destination for European travelers, who increasingly prioritize direct, convenient access to vacation spots.
