Four contestants to showcase Dominican heritage at national Miss Wob Dwiyet pageant

As Dominica enters its annual independence celebration season, all eyes are turning to the Massacre Indoor Sporting Facility this Wednesday, October 21, where four emerging young women will compete for the title of National Miss Wob Dwiyet, a pageant deeply rooted in the island nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Four contestants from across different corners of Dominica have stepped forward to represent their communities and showcase the island’s long-held traditions. Addisa Jno Baptiste, contestant number one, hails from the capital city of Roseau; contestant number two Deniscia Laurent represents the coastal community of Petite Soufrière; Samantha Bazil, third in the running, comes from the northern village of Wesley; and the final contestant, Ta-Donna Cornwall, carries the flag of the coastal town of Portsmouth. All four candidates have spent months preparing to highlight the cultural significance of the Wob Dwiyet tradition on the national stage.

Scheduled to kick off at 8:00 PM local time, the pageant is a core planned event within Dominica’s broader 2026 independence calendar. Beyond the core competition for the national title, attendees will be treated to a full evening of cultural programming, including individual talent showcases from each contestant, formal presentation segments, and the pageant’s iconic centerpiece: a feature spotlighting Dominica’s traditional handcrafted national attire, a core symbol of the island’s cultural identity.

Earlson Mathew, Dominica’s Chief Cultural Officer, has issued a public call for widespread community attendance, urging both long-time pageant enthusiasts and casual visitors to join in celebrating the island’s centuries-old cultural legacy. “This event is more than a beauty competition—it is a platform for young Dominican women to celebrate what makes our nation unique, and to reinforce the cultural pride that binds our communities together,” Mathew noted in his invitation to the public.

The 2026 National Miss Wob Dwiyet Pageant would not be possible without the cross-sector support of a coalition of corporate, cultural, and community partners. Key backers include the National Cultural Council, National Bank of Dominica, Archipelago Trading, J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd., TK International, House of Lorraine, Madame Wob Dwiyet Canada, Buy Grace Hair Body, the OECS Committee, Springfield Trading, and Harris Paints. The collective contributions of these partners have helped bring the cultural celebration to life, aligned with the pageant’s core mission of fostering broader public appreciation for Dominican traditions and strengthening national pride during the independence season.

For community members planning to attend, ticket pricing is structured to accommodate different preferences: prime front seating is available for EC$70, while general bleacher admission is priced at EC$60. For those unable to attend the event in person, organizers have also arranged a paid online streaming option, accessible for a fee of US$20, allowing cultural enthusiasts around the world to tune in and watch the celebration of Dominican heritage.
