In a major step forward for Guyana’s small and medium business ecosystem, the newly launched Guyana Development Bank (GDB) kicked off official operations on Monday, October 5, 2026, rolling out its services exclusively through an online application portal, with no walk-in headquarters available for loan applicants at launch. According to an official statement from the government’s Department of Public Information (DPI), the digital platform is now live and accessible to all eligible applicants at www.gdb.gov.gy.
While the bank launched digitally, in-person support for applicants who need assistance navigating the process will be available soon. The DPI confirmed that details including the locations of physical help desks and the assigned support staff will be formally announced before the end of this week. These help desks will be set up at pre-selected public service centers and existing commercial bank branches across the country, with trained staff on-site to guide applicants through every step of the loan application process.
Zulfikar Ally, Guyana’s Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, has urged all individuals and business owners seeking development financing to access the new online portal, create a personal account, and submit the required documentation. Ally explained that the application workflow has been intentionally designed to be straightforward and inclusive, with tailored requirements based on the size of the requested loan. For applicants seeking financing between $50,000 and $300,000, the process only requires basic personal information: a full name and either a national electronic ID (eID) or passport number. Applicants using their eID will benefit from automatic population of multiple application fields, streamlining the mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process significantly.
For larger loan requests ranging from above $300,000 up to a maximum of $3 million, applicants will need to submit more comprehensive supporting materials, including detailed business proposals and breakdowns of how the financing will be allocated to their projects. Minister Ally emphasized that the digital-first model was built to serve all Guyanese, regardless of their familiarity with digital tools, adding that the upcoming physical help desks will provide one-on-one assistance to anyone who needs support completing their application online.
In a separate press statement, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali framed the launch of the GDB as more than just a new lending institution. He encouraged all Guyanese entrepreneurs to leverage the bank’s resources to grow their ventures and build a formal credit history that will open doors to future financing from traditional commercial banks. “Commit to building yourself a credit rating that will take you to the next level. That will demonstrate to the financial system that you are ready. You are capable. And once given the opportunity, you are built for success,” Ali said in his remarks.
The president stressed that the GDB is not a grant program, but a pathway for economic empowerment and national growth. “This is not a grant; this is your opportunity to earn, your opportunity to build your credit, and your pathway to participate in our national expansion. The Guyana Development Bank is about much more than providing loans. It is being designed as a complete support ecosystem that helps businesses start, grow, and succeed,” he added. Beyond capital financing, the GDB will offer borrowers complementary support including business mentorship, training in financial management and entrepreneurial skills, and specialized extension services to help new ventures thrive. Ali called on all interested applicants to prepare their business plans, complete their online applications, and register for the bank’s available training programs.
The launch of the GDB follows a capital allocation approved in the 2026 national budget, where the government committed an initial capital injection of GY$20 billion as the first tranche of the bank’s total authorized share capital of GY$40 billion.
