“Look at Me. I Am Belize @45”: September Celebrations Begin

Belize has formally launched its annual September Celebrations, marking the start of a national month of festivities honoring 45 years of independent sovereignty, as well as the country’s rich cultural heritage and communal identity. The traditional opening flag-raising ceremonies were held simultaneously across multiple municipalities this year, including the urban hub of Belize City, the coastal tourism center of Ambergris Caye, the northern town of Corozal, and the southern coastal community of Dangriga, drawing crowds of local residents to kick off the month of events.

The national celebration committee has selected the 2026 theme “Look at Me. I Am Belize @45”, which is designed to encourage all Belizeans to turn their attention to the people, local communities and collective achievements that have shaped the nation’s unique identity over the past four and a half decades. The theme invites reflection on how every segment of Belizean society has contributed to the country’s growth from independence to today.

Delivering the keynote address at the Belize City ceremony, Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller emphasized that nation-building is not a task reserved solely for politicians, community leaders or public figures. In his remarks, Miller told gathered attendees that meaningful contribution to national progress does not require holding public office, leading a major national organization, or carrying out extraordinary, headline-grabbing acts. Instead, he noted, Belize grows stronger every single day through the small, consistent choices and actions of ordinary citizens going about their daily lives.

In the coming weeks leading up to the main Independence Day commemoration on September 21, the national calendar is filled with a full slate of patriotic events. These will include cultural festivals showcasing Belize’s diverse ethnic traditions, parades, educational programs highlighting the country’s independence history, and community gatherings designed to bring Belizeans together to celebrate their shared national journey. This year’s celebrations are sponsored in part by RF&G Insurance Ltd., which has supported the national festivities as part of its commitment to Belizean community life.
