A widespread industrial action focused on profit margin disputes has sidelined most fuel operators in Antigua, leaving just one major supplier to meet the nation’s road fuel demand – triggering long queues and a mass rush to the island’s few open service stations.
The strike, launched by independent fuel operators to push for better profit margins, has forced dozens of stations across Antigua to close their gates. Only outlets operated by the West Indies Oil Company (WIOC) have remained open for business, with five locations – Friars Hill, Market Street, English Harbour, Airport, and Barnes – continuing to serve drivers who have nowhere else to refuel.
Antigua’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed that the government has issued formal instructions to WIOC to prioritize fuel stock allocation to its active operating stations. The move is designed to prevent a total collapse of fuel access across the island, which would disrupt daily commutes, emergency services, and commercial transport. As of the latest updates, there remains no clear timeline for when the industrial action will end, leaving both motorists and authorities in limbo as the situation unfolds.
