Two personal bests, three B Finals for Destang at Junior Pan Pac

The 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships wrapped up its four-day run of elite junior-level competitive swimming at the University of British Columbia Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, Canada, and Saint Lucian rising star Antoine Destang closed out his campaign with standout performances that included two new personal bests and three B-Final showings against the world’s top young swimmers.

The 18-year-old, who currently competes as a student-athlete for the University of Michigan Wolverines swimming program, took on six individual events across the championships, going head-to-head with top junior contenders from powerhouse swimming nations including the United States and Canada, as well as emerging talent from across Asia and Oceania. Destang is no stranger to high-profile regional success: he previously claimed two medals and set two new records at the 2025 CARIFTA Swimming Championships hosted in Trinidad & Tobago, a result that cemented his status as one of the Caribbean’s most promising young swimmers.

Destang kicked off his 2026 Pan Pacific campaign on opening Monday with an immediate personal best in the men’s 50m butterfly. Entering the event seeded 16th with a qualifying time of 25.16 seconds, he shaved 0.14 seconds off his previous top mark, which he set at the 2025 CARIFTA Games, to clock 25.02 in the morning preliminaries and secure 16th place, earning a spot in the B Final. In the evening final round, he finished with a time of 25.12 to take third place in the B Final, good for a 13th spot in the overall event rankings. He also competed in the 100m backstroke on day one, dropping his seed time of 59.99 seconds to a 59.32 finish and landing 25th overall.

On Tuesday, Destang joined the starting blocks for two more events: the 100m freestyle and the 50m backstroke. In the 100m freestyle, he posted a opening 25.11 first 50m split before closing in 26.78 for a total time of 51.89, finishing 30th overall across all competitors. Later that session, he clocked 27.89 in the 50m backstroke preliminaries to rank 24th, narrowly missing a spot in the final round.

Wednesday saw Destang secure his second B-Final berth of the championships, this time in the men’s 100m butterfly. He clocked 56.27 in the preliminary heats to take 18th overall, which earned him a spot in the B Final. In the final round, he posted a time of 56.56, earning sixth place in the heat and 16th place in the event’s overall rankings.

Destang closed out his 2026 Junior Pan Pacific experience on Thursday with a second pair of personal best performances in the 50m freestyle, matching his new top time across both heats and finals. Entering the event with a previous best of 23.70 seconds set at the 2024 CCCAN Championships in Mexico, he cut two-hundredths of a second off his mark to clock 23.68 in the prelims, finishing 18th to claim his third B-Final spot of the meet. He repeated the 23.68 time in the evening B Final, taking 10th place in the heat and 20th position in the overall event rankings.

For the 18-year-old rising talent, the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships marked a valuable opportunity to test his speed and endurance against a higher caliber of international competition than he typically faces in regional meets, with multiple personal bests highlighting his continued progress ahead of future collegiate and international competitions.
