Converting into liquefied natural gas not a priority – ExxonMobil Guyana’s chief

ExxonMobil Guyana’s CEO, Alistair Routledge, announced on Monday that the company’s focus in Guyana will be on utilizing natural gas for domestic growth rather than converting it into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for export. This decision comes as ExxonMobil prepares to develop its first non-associated gas field at Longtail in the Stabroek Block. Routledge emphasized that the gas would primarily support power generation, data centers, and an alumina plant, aligning with Guyana’s broader economic development goals. While LNG conversion remains an option, the immediate priority is to maximize the gas’s value within the country. The company aims to complete environmental impact studies by late 2026 and submit a field development plan (FDP) to the Guyanese government. Initial production will focus on condensate, a liquid byproduct of natural gas, for global export. Gas reinjection into wells will also be employed to enhance condensate recovery, with natural gas extraction expected to begin 10 to 15 years after Longtail’s condensate production starts. ExxonMobil forecasts a daily production rate of over one billion cubic feet of natural gas from Longtail. In contrast, water reinjection will be used at the Hammerhead field, which contains heavier oil, with gas potentially exported to existing pipelines or the Liza Unity FPSO to boost oil recovery.

WIN threatens legal action if no more Region 10 voting rounds in 48 hours

The We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) councillors in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) have issued a stern warning of legal action if additional voting rounds for the positions of chairman and vice chairman are not conducted within 48 hours. Represented by Attorney-at-Law Siand Dhurjon, the councillors argue that the current impasse violates legal procedures. Dhurjon emphasized that the law permits up to three more voting rounds, with a final resort involving a public lottery conducted by the Clerk of Council to determine the chairman. The legal notice was directed at Clerk of Council Dwight John, who had prematurely suspended the election process after a single tied vote on October 10 and referred the matter to Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand. Dhurjon criticized this move as illegal and urged the Minister to avoid involvement in any unlawful actions. The lawyer also highlighted that the Minister no longer holds unilateral authority to decide chairmanship appointments. Instead, Dhurjon insisted on adhering to the Local Democratic Organs Act, which outlines a structured process for resolving ties through multiple voting stages and, if necessary, a public lottery. The WIN councillors, including Mark Giring, Denzel Chapman, and others, are determined to ensure the election process is conducted lawfully and transparently.

Former Gold Board Chairman threatens Social Media influencer Mikhail “Guyanese Critic” Rodrigues with defamation lawsuit

Gabriel Lall, the former Chairman of the Guyana Gold Board (GGB), has issued a stern warning to social media influencer Mikhail Rodrigues, popularly known as ‘Guyanese Critic,’ over alleged defamatory statements made on his platforms. Lall, a civil society activist, newspaper columnist, and Eucharistic Minister, has demanded a settlement from Rodrigues, who is known for his pro-People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP) stance. The legal representatives of Lall, Christopher Ram and Nigel Hughes, have categorically denied any involvement of their client in corruption, smuggling, or criminal activities. They assert that the accusations have severely tarnished Lall’s personal and professional reputation, causing public embarrassment and ridicule. In a pre-action letter dated October 7, the lawyers have given Rodrigues until October 17 to propose a settlement, failing which legal proceedings will be initiated. The demands include a public apology and retraction on Rodrigues’ social media platforms and in prominent newspapers like Stabroek News and Kaieteur News. Additionally, Lall seeks substantial compensation for the damages incurred. The lawyers have also indicated that even if a settlement is reached, criminal complaints may still be filed with the Guyana Police Force. This development follows a series of defamation cases Rodrigues has lost in recent months, resulting in significant financial penalties.

Guyana is poised to become a technological hub for the Caribbean with the proposed development of a state-of-the-art data center, estimated to cost between US$2 billion and US$3 billion. President Irfaan Ali unveiled this ambitious plan during the grand opening of the SOMA Hotel and Restaurant, a venture by TOTALTEC Group, on October 11, 2025. The project aims to establish Guyana as a regional leader in innovation, computing, and data storage. The data center, requiring vast land and a stable, cost-effective energy supply, is expected to support various industries, including FinTech, digitization, and modernisation across the Caribbean. President Ali emphasized the strategic importance of this investment, envisioning Guyana as the sovereign storage and computing hub for the region. The initiative aligns with ExxonMobil Guyana’s appraisal of hydrocarbon resources at Longtail in the Stabroek Block, which could fuel energy plants and other industrial facilities. The SOMA Hotel, a symbol of local economic growth, will employ 60 to 100 Guyanese and source materials locally, reflecting the nation’s commitment to sustainable development.

APNU tells Azruddin Mohamed to defend himself publicly, “come clean” on accusations against govt officials

In a bold move, Guyana’s opposition party, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has called on Azruddin Mohamed, the country’s incoming Opposition Leader, and his father, Nazar ‘Shell’ Mohamed, to publicly defend themselves against a series of serious allegations. These accusations, both domestic and international, include fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion linked to gold exports and the purchase of a luxury Lamborghini. APNU emphasized that Azruddin, given his new political role, must address these charges transparently to reassure the public of his compliance with the law. This demand comes after talks between APNU and Azruddin’s We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party collapsed over leadership disputes in regional councils following the September 1 elections. WIN, which secured 16 seats, has accused APNU of colluding with the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) to marginalize them. APNU, which won only 12 seats, has also criticized Azruddin for allegedly withholding incriminating evidence against government officials, urging him to disclose any such information publicly. The situation is further complicated by a pending US extradition request for the Mohameds, who have vowed to challenge it in court. APNU has stressed the importance of due process and warned against political interference in the legal proceedings.
