In a routine targeted checkpoint operation conducted in the Klaaskreek region of Suriname, law enforcement officers have uncovered an illegal cache of a loaded firearm, live ammunition and unprocessed gold, leading to the arrest of the vehicle’s driver following a brief failed escape attempt, local law enforcement confirmed. The operation was carried out jointly by members of two regional policing units: the Midden Regional Assistance Team (Regio Bijstand Team Midden, RBTM) and the Midden Surveillance Unit (Surveillance Midden, SRM).
During a systematic search of a Toyota Vitz compact car stopped at the checkpoint, officers recovered a revolver manufactured by Brazilian firearms producer Amadeo Rossi & CIA, 33 live cartridges, and an undisclosed quantity of unrefined raw gold. Immediately after realizing law enforcement had discovered the illegal items and was preparing to take him into custody, the driver — identified only by the initials J.J. per local privacy protocols — attempted to flee the scene on foot. Law enforcement teams quickly gave chase, and apprehended the suspect just tens of meters away from the checkpoint before he could escape into surrounding terrain.
During initial interrogation, the suspect told investigators he had purchased the revolver in the Surinamese capital Paramaribo, claiming the weapon was intended for personal self-protection. However, further preliminary investigation has confirmed that the raw gold in the suspect’s possession was acquired through illicit means, in violation of Suriname’s national resource and economic crime regulations.
Following the suspect’s initial court appearance, he has been remanded into custody on two separate charges: violation of Suriname’s Firearms Act, and violation of the Economic Crimes Act. All seized items, including the unprocessed gold, firearm, and ammunition, have been retained as evidence to support ongoing criminal proceedings. The suspect has since been transferred to the custody of the Brokopondo Centrum Police Department, which is leading the continuing investigation into the case.
