On a landmark occasion marking 75 years since universal adult suffrage was established in Saint Lucia, the island nation’s Parliament held a special joint sitting on Monday, drawing cross-regional political participation and renewed calls to safeguard the hard-won democratic right to vote.
Addressing reporters outside the parliamentary chamber ahead of the commemorative sitting, Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre emphasized that voting remains a little-understood privilege that should never be treated as an entitlement. Looking back to the era when universal suffrage did not exist, Pierre noted that the vast majority of Saint Lucians were once barred from casting ballots simply because they did not own property. Today, by contrast, every citizen aged 18 and older holds an automatic right to participate in national elections – a transformative shift that carries profound responsibility.
“I want to urge the people of Saint Lucia to use that vote wisely,” Pierre stated, adding that he was grateful for the thoughtful participation Saint Lucian voters demonstrated in the past two national electoral cycles. He framed the call to action as part of a broader goal: ensuring the island nation receives the accountable, responsive governance that its citizens are rightfully owed.
The special commemorative sitting welcomed a high-profile guest from a neighboring Caribbean nation: Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Leader of the Opposition of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, who also shared his reflections with the press before the session got underway. For Gonsalves, the 75th anniversary of universal adult suffrage stands as a critical milestone in the gradual progress of democratic and social reform across the Caribbean. He expressed sincere pleasure at seeing Saint Lucia’s Parliament formally honor this historic achievement, and called his invitation to participate in the commemoration a significant personal honor.
Gonsalves extended his gratitude to the President of Saint Lucia, the Speaker of Parliament, Prime Minister Pierre, the national government, and the people of Saint Lucia for welcoming him to the milestone event, saying he deeply valued the opportunity to take part in the historic observance.
