As one of Saint Lucia’s most cherished cultural traditions prepares for its annual main celebration, the island’s Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) is calling on all residents to lean into national cultural pride and rally around La Magéwit, one of the country’s two iconic traditional flower festivals. To build excitement and broaden community participation ahead of the October 17 main festival, the CDF has organized a special pre-event: La Magéwit Colours Day, scheduled for Friday, October 16. The foundation is encouraging all Saint Lucians—whether heading to work, attending classes, or going about daily errands—to incorporate the festival’s signature blue or purple hues into their outfits for the day.
CDF Executive Director Raymona Henry-Wynne emphasized the deep cultural significance of La Magéwit, framing it as a cornerstone of Saint Lucia’s national identity rather than just a seasonal gathering. In her remarks, Henry-Wynne noted that the festival is far more than an annual social event: it is a irreplaceable expression of Saint Lucia’s intangible cultural heritage, weaving together centuries of local history, collective identity, creative expression, and shared national pride. As one of just two traditional flower festivals deeply rooted in Saint Lucian culture, she argued that preserving, promoting, and updating the tradition to fit modern life is a shared responsibility for all residents.
Henry-Wynne explained that grassroots initiatives like La Magéwit Colours Day and the main Gwan Fèt celebration are designed to move the festival beyond its historic localized boundaries and invite broader participation across all segments of Saint Lucian society, from school campuses to corporate workplaces and neighborhood communities. She specifically highlighted the critical role of youth engagement in securing the tradition’s long-term future, noting that getting younger generations involved today ensures the cherished custom will be sustained and passed down intact to Saint Lucia’s future generations.
Beyond in-person participation, the CDF is encouraging residents to share their Colours Day experiences on social media platforms. Attendees and participants are invited to post photos of their blue and purple outfits, or short videos of themselves performing beloved traditional La Magéwit songs, and tag the official CDF account @cdfsaintlucia to join the wider online conversation.
The full schedule of celebrations kicks into full gear on Saturday, October 17, when the annual La Magéwit Gwan Fèt will take place in Dennery Village. The day’s formal events will open at 10 a.m. with a celebratory church service at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, followed by a vibrant community parade winding through the streets of Dennery Village. The main festival gathering will then convene for the day at the grounds of the Dennery Multipurpose Centre, where attendees can enjoy full traditional festivities.
