PSU: We Will Not Defend Wrongdoing

In a landmark formal statement released October 6, 2026, the Public Service Union (PSU) has drawn a clear line between protecting the legitimate rights of its members and shielding wrongdoing, announcing it will not provide defense support for any public officer formally found guilty of misconduct or corruption. The announcement marks a firm reaffirmation of the union’s long-held stance on public sector accountability, responding to growing public attention surrounding recent allegations of improper behavior among personnel in two key government agencies: Customs and Immigration. Most recently, one immigration officer has faced criminal extortion charges linked to their official role, bringing the issue of public service integrity to the forefront of public discourse.

The PSU emphasized that while it remains committed to upholding the legal and workplace rights of all public servants, this commitment stops short of protecting members from the consequences of proven unlawful or unethical behavior. Though the union declined to name specific individuals or open investigations currently underway, it confirmed it is actively monitoring the unfolding allegations related to the two departments, and clarified that providing legal representation to an accused member during investigation and trial does not equate to endorsement of their alleged actions.

Underpinning its position, the union cited specific regulatory provisions outlined in Sections 82(2)(e), (f), (g), and (h) of the national Public Service Regulations, which cover multiple categories of misconduct that cast doubt on a public officer’s professional integrity. The PSU stressed that these regulatory rules must be applied evenly, fairly, and without exception to every public servant, regardless of their seniority within the government or their standing as a union member.

In addition to setting out its own policy, the union called on all government ministries and relevant oversight bodies to move forward with investigations into misconduct allegations quickly, impartially, and with full transparency. It also urged authorities to take firm, decisive disciplinary action whenever wrongdoing is confirmed through evidence. At the same time, the union reaffirmed its commitment to due process, noting that any officer accused of misconduct must be given full opportunity to respond to claims and mount a defense through established official disciplinary procedures.

The PSU further highlighted the broader damage that unchecked corruption and misconduct inflicts on the entire public service: not only does it erode public trust in government institutions, it also taints the reputation of the vast majority of public officers who carry out their duties honestly and diligently every day. To counter this risk, the union urged all its members to adhere to the highest possible standards of integrity, professional conduct, and transparency, reminding every public servant that their individual behavior shapes public perception of the entire public service sector. The union’s latest policy statement aligns fully with its previously articulated commitments to accountability in public office.
