COTTON TREE VILLAGE, CAYO DISTRICT – A peaceful community gathering to honor a deceased resident erupted into violence early Tuesday morning, leaving two men dead and law enforcement officials scrambling to contain rising tensions between rival local factions. The shooting occurred around 3:00 a.m. on October 16, 2026, during a wake for Kenisha Hyde, a local resident whose funeral was scheduled later the same day.
Authorities have identified the deceased victims as Fernando Jones and Esau Perez. According to Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, a staff officer with the local police department, Jones was the clear intended target of the attack. “When Jones was leaving the wake location, an armed male approached and fired multiple shots striking Jones,” Smith explained in an on-the-record interview with News Five. “As the gunman fled, he fired additional shots toward Perez, hitting him as well.”
Both victims died at the scene before emergency responders could arrive. Police have since taken two suspects into custody for questioning as they work to unpack the full details of the attack. Smith confirmed that Jones was already known to law enforcement, and the shooting is tied to a long-running feud between rival groups active in the Cotton Tree Village area.
In the wake of the attack, police leadership has acknowledged a lapse in existing patrol operations that were specifically deployed to the area earlier this year to prevent exactly this type of violence. “We stationed a permanent patrol in this village because we recognized that violent incidents of this nature were likely to occur,” Smith noted. “After a review of last night’s operations, the police commissioner identified shortcomings that we are already addressing. Accountability measures will be taken, and we are adjusting our operational strategy to strengthen security going forward.”
As the community processes the shock of the double killing, police have maintained a visible presence in Cotton Tree Village. The funeral for Kenisha Hyde concluded Tuesday afternoon, and officers are working to balance respect for the Hyde family’s grieving period with the need to de-escalate tensions among the friends and relatives of Jones and Perez, who are angry over the deaths. Investigations into the shooting remain ongoing, with authorities working to prevent any retaliatory attacks that could further destabilize the community.
