Young Barber Ambushed and Killed in Sandhill

A quiet Sandhill community is grappling with shock and grief after a well-liked 21-year-old local barber was gunned down in a pre-planned ambush while riding his bicycle last week. The October 2026 killing of Jahrule Gibson, who had built a reputation across the village cutting hair and bringing energy to every gathering, has left neighbors and family searching for answers and struggling to process the senseless violence.

The fatal attack unfolded around 10:30 p.m. Friday, along Salt Creek Road. According to official police accounts, Gibson was en route to a nearby local shop, traveling on bicycle alongside a male minor who was on horseback, when the two noticed a vehicle trailing them. Gibson attempted to escape the area before an individual stepped out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots in his direction, striking him with fatal wounds. Law enforcement received the first call about the shooting roughly 15 minutes after the attack, and officers from the Crime Investigating Unit rushed to the scene.

“When we arrived, we found the lifeless body of 21-year-old Jahrule Gibson, who had sustained multiple gunshot injuries,” explained ACP Hilberto Romero, head of the unit, in an interview with News Five. “He was rushed for emergency care but was pronounced dead on arrival.” Investigators worked through the night at the crime scene, collecting evidence and processing the area until the early hours of Saturday morning, before Gibson’s body was removed for autopsy.

The victim’s family has shared new details that suggest the attack was prearranged. According to Gibson’s cousin, who was at the family home the night of the killing, an unidentified young man arrived at the residence and called Gibson out by name. “I don’t know what exactly happened that night. All I know is the young boy came and called him, and I didn’t even realize he’d left the house,” the cousin said in a phone interview. When asked if Gibson had any known conflicts with other people in the community, the cousin denied any knowledge of existing disputes.

Police, however, say they have identified a clear line of inquiry rooted in longstanding tension between Gibson and another villager. The suspect is already known to law enforcement, and Romero confirmed that the fatal shooting stemmed from an ongoing, personal rivalry between the two men in the village. When pressed if the conflict was tied to gang activity, Romero acknowledged it falls into the category of inter-personal village rivalry. He also confirmed that Gibson had prior interactions with police, though no further details on those interactions have been released to the public.

For many in Sandhill, Gibson is far more than a name in a police investigation. He had worked as a barber for three years, becoming the go-to stylist for nearly every resident in the area. To his family, he was the upbeat, joyful heart of any gathering. “The whole family feels this loss deeply — he was known by everyone in Sandhill, he was practically everyone’s barber here,” Gibson’s brother said in an interview. “He was always excited, always the clown of the crowd. He was always happy, always joking, always laughing. That’s just who he was. We’re really going to miss him.”

Family accounts add that Gibson was still breathing when relatives arrived at the scene after the shooting, and he ultimately died in his cousin’s arms. As of Monday, investigators are still actively searching for the known suspect and working to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the attack. The community has come together to support the grieving Gibson family, even as many grapple with fear and uncertainty following the high-profile killing in the normally quiet area.
