PUP Launches Municipal Campaign on 76th Anniversary

As Belize prepares for its 2027 municipal elections, the country’s dominant political force has formally entered the race, launching its campaign against a backdrop of celebration and longstanding incumbent advantage. On Saturday, October 5, 2026, the People’s United Party (PUP) marked its 76th anniversary at Belize’s Memorial Park, using the historic occasion to unveil its full slate of nine mayoral candidates ahead of the March 2027 vote.

Entering the election cycle, the PUP holds a commanding position in Belize’s local governance: eight of the nation’s nine mayoral seats are already controlled by the party, alongside 61 of the 67 total municipal council seats up for re-election. That overwhelming majority positions PUP as the clear frontrunner to beat in the upcoming contest, with candidates openly framing their campaign as a defense of the party’s proven track record of local governance.

At the launch event, Belize City mayoral candidate Eluide Miller rallied gathered supporters, emphasizing a unified party message centered on the PUP’s longstanding slogan of progress under PUP leadership. “We may represent different communities but we carry one responsibility: to prove that wherever PUP leads, our people progress,” Miller told the crowd. He called on all PUP candidates, sitting mayors and councilors across the country to carry forward the momentum built through electoral victories in 2018, 2020, 2024 and 2025, and deliver on the party’s commitments to local communities from small rural villages to the major urban centers of Belmopan and Belize City. Miller closed his speech by energizing the crowd with repeated calls to action, asking supporters to confirm their readiness to campaign, serve, and secure victory in March 2027.

The PUP’s launch does not come without competition: the main opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), has also timed its own campaign launch to coincide with its anniversary, setting the stage for a formal, high-stakes battle for control of Belize’s municipal institutions. With both major parties now having entered the campaign cycle, the race for local government seats across Belize is already fully underway.
