Punta Bergantín projects a new investment cycle as an “economic engine” of the North

One of the most ambitious tourism and real estate initiatives in the Dominican Republic’s northern region has entered a critical growth stage, backed by over $56 million in early infrastructure investment designed to unlock new capital, create thousands of local jobs, and accelerate broad-based productive activity across Puerto Plata and surrounding areas.

Andrés Marranzini, executive director of the Punta Bergantín Trust, outlined the project’s progress and long-term strategic vision during the 2026 North Region Construction & Real Estate Summit, where he framed the development as a catalyst to reestablish Puerto Plata as a top-tier, globally competitive tourism destination.

Marranzini explained that the project has reached a pivotal inflection point, where simultaneous progress on core public infrastructure, structuring of hotel and residential components, and expansion of world-class recreational amenities are converging to set the stage for future growth. Construction is already underway on foundational upgrades including regional roads, expanded electrical grids, and enhanced water supply systems, alongside a championship golf course and all supporting facilities required for the full buildout of the destination.

“We are not just building another real estate development—we are laying the foundational conditions for Puerto Plata to once again draw consistent, long-term international investment, expand and diversify its tourism product, and ignite a new economic dynamic that will lift the entire northern Dominican Republic,” Marranzini said in his address to the summit.

A core pillar of the project’s strategy is its regional focus: while the development itself is sited in Puerto Plata, its economic benefits are designed to extend across the entire northern corridor, linking the province’s established tourism strengths to the Cibao region’s (and specifically Santiago’s) robust industrial and commercial base, skilled human capital, mature financial services ecosystem, and extensive local supplier network. This cross-regional collaboration aims to expand tourism-linked production chains and create new commercial opportunities for a wide range of sectors, including construction, manufacturing, food and beverage production, agriculture, professional services, transportation, logistics, technology, and small business commerce.

“Punta Bergantín is located in Puerto Plata, but its economic opportunity belongs to the whole region,” Marranzini emphasized. “We are committed to ensuring that every dollar of investment coming into this destination translates to tangible opportunities for suppliers, businesses, professionals, and working people across Santiago, Puerto Plata, and every corner of the north.”

The bulk of the current $56 million investment is allocated to the core infrastructure needed to attract and support future private development, which will gradually be complemented by a full slate of tourism and residential offerings: ranging from boutique and full-service hotels and luxury residential units to mixed commercial hubs, recreational spaces, exclusive beach clubs, and the 18-hole championship golf course designed by renowned architects Beau Welling and Davis Love III.

Marranzini also stressed that the project is structured to deliver direct, lasting benefits to adjacent local communities, most notably Villa Montellano, through targeted initiatives to integrate local small businesses into the project’s supply chain, create accessible local employment, and invest in upskilling programs for regional workforces.

“The success of Punta Bergantín cannot be measured only by what we build within our project boundaries,” Marranzini said. “Our core purpose is to build lasting skills, stable jobs, new local businesses, and opportunities that stay in this region. That is how a tourism investment becomes true, sustainable development.”

He added: “We are building a new growth engine for the entire North. Puerto Plata already has rich history, extraordinary natural landscapes, existing tourism infrastructure, and a globally recognized brand as a travel destination. Santiago and the Cibao region have entrepreneurial drive, world-class talent, and a solid productive foundation. Connecting these unique strengths will allow the impact of Punta Bergantín to extend far beyond the development itself.”

Overall, the Punta Bergantín project aims to strengthen Puerto Plata’s ability to compete for global tourism investment, while introducing new hotel, residential, and entertainment offerings under a comprehensive, sustainable development model aligned with the northern region’s long-term economic goals.
