As a new academic year gets underway across Antigua, hundreds of local children are stepping into their classrooms with more than just new materials—they are carrying the confidence that comes from knowing their local community stands behind their potential. This year marks the second consecutive collaborative project from three regional organizations: the Sandals Foundation, Digicel Antigua, and Tropical Adventures. Their annual Back-to-School Initiative, which launched last year with a support event focused on children in Barbuda, has expanded its scope this term to reach more young learners across the island of Antigua.
This year’s outreach extended to multiple underserved communities, including Grays Green, Willikies, Cedar Grove, and Seaview Farm, with organized handover events designed to connect the partnering organizations directly with the children and families they support. Beyond providing tangible learning tools, the initiative addresses a widespread financial burden many local households face at the start of each school year, removing a key barrier that can prevent children from starting the term prepared and focused.
Over the course of the project, hundreds of fully stocked backpacks were distributed to students in need. Each pack included a full set of core classroom essentials, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, rulers, and geometry sets. The outreach also extended an extra layer of support to children who had participated in the ACE Summer Camp, helping smooth their transition from recreational summer programming back to structured academic learning.
For the students who received donations, the experience meant far more than gaining new supplies. Distribution events were marked by widespread excitement and broad grins, as children unpacked their new backpacks and explored their contents. The small, intentional gesture delivered a clear, meaningful message: the surrounding community cares about their success, giving many young learners a much-needed boost of confidence to approach the new school year with optimism.
That focus on nurturing young possibility is the core mission of the entire initiative, according to partnering representatives. Speaking at the closing ceremony for the ACE Summer Camp, Leon Norville, Public Relations Manager at Sandals Grande Antigua and a lead for the Sandals Foundation’s work in the region, shared perspective on what the project represents beyond the physical supplies. “A backpack can carry books, but it can also carry ambition. A notebook can hold lessons, but it can also hold dreams. And a simple gift can send a powerful message to a child: your community sees you, your community believes in you, and your future matters,” Norville said.
Mark Ryan, General Manager of Tropical Adventures, echoed that sentiment, noting his company’s enthusiasm for continuing the partnership for a second year. “We’re just happy to be able to help and give back where we can. It’s a great initiative, and we’re really happy to be a part of it again this year. Being able to put something in the hands of a child that they can use for school, and knowing it helps a family in some small way, is what makes this worthwhile for us. We’re proud to be part of the partnership and to do our little bit to support the children in our community,” Ryan said.

The three-way collaboration serves as a powerful example of what cross-sector private and non-profit partnership can achieve when groups align around a shared community goal. From last year’s pilot program in Barbuda to this year’s expanded outreach across Antigua, the initiative has grown steadily while keeping the needs and potential of children at the center of all programming.
Norville emphasized that cross-community collaboration remains critical to creating long-term, meaningful change for local populations. “It takes a community to effect change. It takes a community to inspire hope, and it takes a community to give our children the confidence to believe that anything is possible,” he said.
As children settle into their daily classroom routines and begin another year of academic growth, the donated backpacks will become a daily part of their school experience, holding textbooks, homework assignments, new ideas, and long-held dreams. But they also carry a simple, lasting message: you are seen, you are supported, and your future matters. In closing his remarks to ACE Summer Camp participants, Norville offered a final encouragement: “May you return to school equipped not only with new supplies, but with new confidence, new dreams and a renewed belief in what is possible.”
