When the final votes were counted in the People’s United Party’s (PUP) closely contested Belize District mayoral nomination contest on August 31, 2026, the race between candidates Allan Pollard and Eluide Miller may have concluded – but lingering questions about the massive amount of campaign spending have only grown louder.
Sunday’s convention displayed a sprawling, well-resourced campaign operation from both sides, a visible indicator that large sums of money were poured into the weeks-long lead-up to the nomination vote. Informal discussions with insider campaign sources have yielded estimates that total spending from both candidates combined could reach as high as $1 million. Broken down, that would put each candidate’s spending in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, allocated to voter mobilization efforts, branded campaign merchandise like T-shirts, event infrastructure such as tents, and a wide range of other campaign activities designed to sway delegates.
Not all senior party figures have endorsed that seven-figure estimate, however. Kareem Musa, Area Representative for Caribbean Shores, stopped short of confirming the $1 million figure but acknowledged that the sheer scale of spending was alarming. “It frightened me as much as it frightened you,” Musa told reporters, noting that the overwhelming display of resources on Sunday was impossible to ignore. “Coming out here today it certainly is overwhelming. You look at all the t-shirts and all the tents, clearly a nice penny was spent out here today.”
Beyond the debate over final spending numbers, the historic convention has reinvigorated calls for formal campaign finance legislation in Belize – a reform Musa says is already in motion, with a full draft expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Musa confirmed that he has already held consultations with the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and other key social partners to advance the policy, and has personally committed to meeting the end-of-year deadline for a draft bill.
Musa justified the unusually high spending in this contest by pointing to its unprecedented nature and high political stakes. “High stakes, high tension,” he explained, adding, “We have never had in the history of our party a mayoral convention, and that would explain why.”
For the general election, the fight now moves to the municipal stage: Eluide Miller secured the nomination and will stand as the PUP’s official mayoral candidate in the March 2027 municipal elections, where he will lead the party’s campaign to retake control of Belize City Hall.
