In a significant milestone for cross-regional educational exchange, 75 students from Belize are set to begin their academic journeys in Taiwan this year after securing competitive awards through two prestigious scholarship initiatives: the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship and the TaiwanICDF Scholarship. The cohort has been departing in staggered groups across three consecutive days, with diplomatic representatives from the Embassy of Taiwan in Belize traveling to the local airport to extend official well-wishes and formal send-off to the departing students. Of the successful awardees, 35 earned spots through the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship program, while the remaining 40 were selected for the TaiwanICDF Scholarship.
To prepare the students for their transition and celebrate their achievement, an orientation session and alumni networking event was held in mid-August ahead of their scheduled departures. The gathering served a dual purpose: it honored the incoming cohort’s hard work that earned them the scholarships, and it created a space for intergenerational connection between past and future Taiwan-based scholars.
Numerous Belizean alumni who completed their studies in Taiwan and now hold professional roles across key sectors of Belize’s economy and public life attended the event. These alumni work across a wide range of fields including public health, international trade, cultural administration, energy development, diplomatic service, and government public administration, and they used the gathering to share first-hand insights about navigating academic life and daily living in Taiwan with the 2026 cohort. Two featured alumni speakers took the stage during the event: Alobi Young, current president of the Belize Taiwan Alumni Society, and Ilona Smiling, who serves as Director of the Museum of Belize, Houses of Culture, and Museum of Belizean Arts. Ian Oliva, president of the Belize Taiwan Association, also delivered closing remarks offering encouragement and advice to the students as they prepare for their academic adventure abroad.
