Against a global backdrop where evidence-based policy has become the gold standard for effective governance, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has launched a targeted technical assistance initiative to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s capacity to leverage data for strategic government decision-making.
The partnership focuses on upgrading the small island nation’s data collection infrastructure, standardizing statistical methodologies, and upskilling government personnel to analyze and interpret complex demographic, economic, and social datasets. For a developing small island state like Antigua and Barbuda, which faces unique challenges ranging from climate change vulnerability to uneven economic growth, the lack of robust, timely data has long created bottlenecks for designing targeted public policies that address local needs.
Through the ECLAC program, national statistical agencies and government departments will gain access to advanced analytical tools, regional best practice frameworks, and hands-on training that bridges existing capacity gaps. ECLAC officials note that investing in data governance not only improves public service delivery but also enhances the country’s ability to access international development funding, track progress toward United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and respond more effectively to emergent challenges such as natural disasters and economic shocks.
Representatives from the Antigua and Barbuda government have welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing that data-driven decision-making will help the administration prioritize initiatives that drive inclusive growth and build national resilience. The two sides have outlined a multi-phase rollout, starting with a comprehensive audit of existing data systems, followed by targeted upgrades and ongoing technical support to ensure long-term sustainability of the interventions.
