On July 28, 2026, Belize Bank Limited marked another milestone in its long-standing investment in Belize’s future generation, awarding full-ride, all-expense-paid scholarships to 16 high-achieving students from across the country during its 14th annual scholarship award ceremony. What began as a community initiative over a decade ago has grown into one of the most impactful educational support programs in the nation, opening pathways to higher learning for young people who might otherwise face barriers to accessing quality education.
Speaking at the ceremony, Belize Bank Executive Chairman Filippo Alario shared the program’s proven track record of transforming lives and communities across Belize. Since the program’s launch, more than 250 students have received support, with alumni going on to achieve extraordinary milestones: several have graduated from top global institutions including Harvard University, while many others have built successful careers within Belize Bank itself, advancing rapidly through leadership roles. These outcomes, Alario explained, have reinforced the bank’s commitment to expanding the program, noting that investment in young scholars ripples outward to benefit entire families, neighborhoods, and the nation as a whole. “I can’t think of any other initiative that is more worthy than this one, because you’re not also helping a kid, you’re helping a family, you’re helping a community, and you’re helping the country,” Alario said.
Unlike many traditional scholarship programs that only cover partial tuition costs, Belize Bank’s initiative eliminates all financial burdens for recipients, covering full tuition, required school supplies, and structured mentorship from bank professionals. The program offers tailored support based on academic level: 10 high school recipients this year will receive four years of continuous support, while six sixth form students will get two years of funding paired with one-on-one career guidance. For returning recipient Aliza Doniz, an 18-year-old now moving on to tertiary studies, the scholarship has allowed her to pursue her goal of working with young people across Belize. Doniz is currently majoring in psychology and sociology, a path that leaves open multiple career options from school counseling and teaching to social work and youth therapy. “In my heart I’ve always known that I’ve wanted to do that and be able to help other people,” Doniz shared, adding that the financial and professional support from the program has given her the flexibility to explore her options without the stress of overwhelming education debt.
Alario emphasized that the mentorship component is the program’s most valuable offering, far beyond the financial support it provides. Each scholar is paired with a senior Belize Bank manager who offers ongoing advice, professional insight, and personal support throughout their entire academic career, helping students navigate challenges and plan for long-term career success. For many low-income families, the program has been life-changing. Tamica Faber, a single mother whose son received this year’s award, called the scholarship a massive weight lifted off her family’s shoulders. “That is a big relief. I’m so happy for that because I’m a single mom, so I’m so proud, and I’m happy for the scholarship, so I hope he keep it up, and he can graduate,” Faber said.
Looking ahead, Belize Bank has announced plans to expand access to the program, increasing the number of full-ride scholarships available to sixth form students in coming years as part of its ongoing commitment to empowering Belize’s youth. The program continues to align with the bank’s core mission of investing in long-term national growth by nurturing the next generation of Belizean leaders.
