After lying dormant for more than a decade, one of Barbados’ most beloved cultural spectacles, Cohobblopot, is set to make a highly anticipated comeback this summer, with organizers crafting a one-of-a-kind experience that weaves time-honored tradition with cutting-edge creative innovation.
Speaking to reporters at the official media launch held Saturday, producer Ricky Nurse, who represented the event’s full production team, laid out the core vision for the August 4 showcase, which will take place on the grounds of the island’s scenic National Botanical Gardens. Nurse explained that the revival comes at a pivotal moment for Barbadian cultural preservation, offering a rare chance to honor the nation’s deep-rooted cultural heritage while updating the event’s format and content to resonate with younger audience members who have not experienced the spectacle firsthand.
“Branded as Courts Ready Cash and 98.1 The One Cohobblopot, this event gives us the unique opportunity to reimagine a showcase that has always stood as an authentic celebration of Bajan creativity and cultural identity,” Nurse told attendees. “Our team recognizes that this creative reimagining is critical right now, and contrary to common assumption, young people are not disconnected from or uninterested in our cultural legacy.”
Nurse emphasized that the production’s overarching mission is to bridge the growing generational gap in cultural engagement. The team is approaching this goal by centering the event’s rich history, rather than sidelining it, while refusing to let the showcase become a stagnant relic of the past. To achieve this balance, organizers have intentionally integrated emerging young creators into every level of the production team, ensuring the final event feels fresh, relevant, and energetic for audiences of all ages.
“We’ve pushed ourselves to build a production that honors the deep nostalgia many long-time attendees hold for Cohobblopot, while also acknowledging that meaningful progress requires a creative refresh to connect with new generations of Bajans,” Nurse added. “The entire team is working tirelessly to lift up younger creative voices, while building a professional, world-class production that celebrates the very heart of Barbadian creative talent.”
Organizers project that the revamped showcase will highlight the full breadth of Barbados’ local creative ecosystem, featuring work from seasoned veteran artists alongside rising young talent across a wide range of artistic disciplines. On the night of the event, attendees will see work from fashion designers, musicians, dancers, and young animators, all coming together to showcase the skill and diversity of the island’s tight-knit cultural community.
