A landmark new initiative designed to empower emerging young athletes in Antigua and Barbuda officially launched this week, drawing widespread praise from government leaders for the private sector’s investment in national youth and sports development. On Monday morning, top executives of the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) formally unveiled the annual ECAB Game Changers Scholarship at a ceremony hosted at the bank’s Redcliffe Street branch, marking a new chapter of public-private collaboration to nurture local sporting talent.
The one-time annual scholarship carries an award value of 25,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars, created to address a persistent gap facing talented young athletes who wish to pursue competitive sports alongside academic study at international secondary and post-secondary institutions. Many promising local athletes face crippling financial barriers when seeking opportunities to train and compete abroad while completing their education, and the new scholarship is tailored to ease that dual burden, allowing recipients to focus on excelling both in their classrooms and on the field, track, or pool. Eligibility is restricted to athletes competing in three key sports: track and field, swimming, and football.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dwayne George, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Sports and Creative Industries, celebrated ECAB as a model corporate citizen for stepping forward to support the nation’s youth. On behalf of the Antigua and Barbuda government, George emphasized that intentional partnerships between the public sector and local private businesses are critical to creating equal opportunity for young athletes to reach their full potential, regardless of their economic background.
George highlighted that countless young Antiguans and Barbudans hold big dreams of following in the footsteps of national sporting legends like Joella Lloyd, Janil Williams, Peter Byers, Quinton Griffith, and Karin Clashing, competing at the highest national and international levels. “As a government, and in partnership with Corporate Antigua and Barbuda, we must do all in our power to ensure the dreams and aspirations of our future generation are realised, while at the same time place emphasis on sports development,” George stated.
The minister added that access to athletic and academic opportunity plays a foundational role in the healthy personal and professional growth of young people, making ECAB’s targeted investment in youth sports development particularly worthy of recognition. “To ECAB, you have consistently proven to be a cut above the rest. Your support in education, community development and culture have not gone unnoticed. Again, we applaud your continued efforts as good Corporate Citizens and wish you success in your future endeavours,” he added.
For aspiring applicants, the scholarship has clear eligibility requirements. Candidates must be legal residents of Antigua and Barbuda between the ages of 14 and 21, planning to enter their first year of accredited study abroad at an approved high school, college, or university, and must already hold a partial athletic or academic scholarship from that institution. Applicants must also demonstrate proven excellence in their chosen sport of track and field, swimming, or football.
All completed applications will be evaluated by a dedicated ECAB Game Changers Scholarship Selection Committee. Recipients will be selected based on a holistic set of criteria, including their past academic achievement, verified financial need, the quality and personal depth of their application essay, a professional recommendation from their current head coach, and performance in a formal interview for candidates shortlisted in the process. The deadline for interested athletes to submit their complete applications is August 21, 2026.
