On a routine Friday morning commute, a sudden mechanical failure sparked chaos on one of the Bahamas’ key river crossings, when an out-of-control Mack truck barreled through crowded traffic on the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge, triggering a widespread collision that left multiple vehicles destroyed and stunned onlookers in shock. Miraculously, however, emergency officials confirmed no life-threatening injuries were sustained in the incident.
According to Chief Superintendent Sybrina Porter, head of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Traffic Division, the heavy-duty truck was traveling northbound toward Paradise Island when its braking system failed as it crested the bridge’s highest point. Without functioning brakes to slow or stop its movement, the truck continued rolling forward unchecked, striking and damaging a string of passenger vehicles in its path before finally coming to a halt directly at the bridge’s toll plaza.
