New 5-cent coins to replace Queen’s portrait with ECCB logo and Caribbean flags

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), the regional monetary authority serving 8 Eastern Caribbean island nations and territories, is set to launch its newly redesigned 5-cent circulation coins in a phased rollout beginning next week, with Montserrat selected as the first jurisdiction to receive the updated currency units. Following the Montserrat launch, Grenada will welcome the new 5-cent coins during the week of 16 November 2026, before the remaining six participating member states of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) – Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – receive their allocations during the week of 23 November 2026. The most prominent update to the new coin series appears on its obverse (front face): the longstanding portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that adorned the previous generation of 5-cent coins has been replaced with the official ECCB logo, encircled by the national flags of all ECCU member jurisdictions to reflect the collective identity of the regional currency union. In a deliberate move to preserve public familiarity with the widely recognized coin, the reverse (back face) retains the iconic, centuries-old image of the sailing ship *Golden Hind*, a beloved cultural marker that has featured on Eastern Caribbean 5-cent coins for decades. ECCB leadership noted that the redesign delivers a refreshed, modern visual identity for the region’s circulation currency, while honoring shared historical and cultural heritage through the retention of the familiar *Golden Hind* motif. The central bank has committed to publishing ongoing public updates as the new coins enter circulation across all ECCU territories in the coming months. Established in October 1983, the ECCB serves as the unified monetary regulatory body for all 8 ECCU member jurisdictions, overseeing currency stability and financial system integrity across the Eastern Caribbean region.
