Browne Places Youth and Women’s Opportunities at Centre of Commonwealth Agenda

Delivering a keynote address during the official launch of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) hosted in Antigua and Barbuda, Prime Minister Gaston Browne laid out a targeted, multi-pronged roadmap to revitalize cross-member collaboration across the 56-nation intergovernmental bloc. Browne framed four high-impact priority areas as the foundation for tangible, inclusive growth: expanded targeted scholarship schemes for youth across low and middle-income Commonwealth nations, co-developed joint research initiatives between regional and global higher education institutions, structured professional exchange programs to upskill workforces across key sectors, and coordinated investment in accessible digital technology infrastructure to narrow the widening digital divide between member states. Beyond economic and development frameworks, the Antiguan leader issued a firm call to eliminate systemic, structural barriers that have long blocked women from accessing equal representation, economic participation, and leadership opportunities across Commonwealth societies. He emphasized that no single stakeholder group could deliver meaningful progress in isolation, calling for coordinated, cross-sector collaboration between national administrations, private sector enterprises, academic institutions, and grassroots civil society organizations to turn shared policy commitments into measurable, on-the-ground results for ordinary citizens. Browne also anchored the entire proposed cooperation agenda in the Commonwealth’s core founding values, noting that unwavering commitments to democratic governance, universal human rights, the rule of law, and full respect for every member state’s national sovereignty must serve as non-negotiable guiding principles to underpin all efforts to deepen collective economic integration and shared prosperity across the bloc.
