On a Monday gathering at Antigua and Barbuda’s Government House, a special educational presentation led by Peetron Thomas made waves as part of the official programming accompanying the royal visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen. Thomas, who holds dual roles as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Coordinator for the Americas at Next Generation Global Connect (NGGC) and a representative of the National Public Library of Antigua and Barbuda, led the session alongside delegations from Motion Pictures Antigua, targeting young attendees including local Brownie Guides and students affiliated with Motion Pictures Antigua. The interactive session walked participants through all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, placing targeted, hands-on focus on SDG 14: Life Below Water, the global framework dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring the sustainable use of all oceanic and coastal resources. To make the learning experience immersive, Thomas centered the activity around the Commonwealth-themed children’s book *A Message in a Bottle*, weaving narrative storytelling, actionable environmental awareness prompts, and a custom-designed activity booklet tailored for young learners to drive engagement. The event aligned with two landmark national milestones for Antigua and Barbuda: the 45th anniversary of the nation’s independence, and its upcoming role as host of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), as local organizers work to elevate public discourse around literacy and collective environmental stewardship. During the session, Her Majesty the Queen joined the group of young attendees to participate directly in the activities, while His Majesty the King toured other exhibits on display across the Government House grounds. Following the presentation, Thomas shared that the experience represented a uniquely meaningful platform to showcase how narrative storytelling and creative, play-based education can empower young people to take active, leading roles in local and global sustainable development efforts. Looking beyond the one-day event, Thomas is advancing a cross-regional proposal to launch a network of official SDG Youth Groups spanning countries across the Americas, with plans to formally submit the initiative through NGGC to formalize structures for expanded youth participation and cross-border regional collaboration. Leadership at Next Generation Global Connect publicly congratulated Thomas on his successful Government House presentation, lauding his exceptional representation of the organization and his work to amplify public understanding of the SDGs on a globally prominent stage. The entire initiative underscores Thomas’s longstanding dedication to advancing youth development, accessible literacy, creative learning, and ecological consciousness, while highlighting the underrecognized, high-impact role public libraries can play in driving progress toward UN sustainable development targets at both local and international levels.
