Italy : Four Haitian personalities honored in Italy

Against the historic backdrop of the Norman-Swabian Castle in Sannicandro di Bari, Italy, the 10th edition of the Lucius Annaeus Seneca International Academic Prize for Contemporary Literature drew to a close on Saturday, October 24, 2026, with a landmark celebration of Haitian intellectual, civic, and humanitarian excellence on the global stage. The Senate of the Academy of Philosophical Arts and Sciences of Bari curated a solemn tribute to four outstanding Haitian personalities, recognizing their unwavering research rigor, transformative community leadership, and lifelong commitment to humanitarian and public service. Leading the cohort of honorees is Professor Evens Emmanuel, a prominent teacher-researcher at Quisqueya University, member of Haiti’s National Agency for Higher Education and Scientific Research (ANESRS), and holder of the UNESCO Chair for Water, Hygiene and Sanitation in Educational Institutions. He was conferred the exceptional academic title of *Scientiae et Civilitatis Magister* alongside the Cross of Academic Merit, in recognition of his groundbreaking work in environmental sciences, public health, and sustainability, as well as his tireless advocacy for scientific diplomacy and cross-border academic collaboration. In his acceptance address, Professor Emmanuel dedicated his award to Haiti’s entire higher education ecosystem, Quisqueya University, and the nation’s broader scientific and intellectual community, emphasizing that knowledge and research must be treated as shared public goods, powerful levers for collective emancipation, and tools to advance equity for all Haitian people. The second honoree, Vanessa Clergé, a final-year student at Quisqueya University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, was formally appointed *Ambasciatrice della Pace* (Ambassador of Peace) for her grassroots work advancing peacebuilding, youth leadership development, and international cross-cultural cooperation. Haitian-American clinical psychologist Dr. Marie Guerda Nicolas, a Boston University PhD graduate, tenured professor at the University of Miami, and co-founder of community-led non-profit Ayiti Community Trust, received the prestigious *Laudis Charta Ob Obfirmata Opera e Studio* distinction honoring her decades of dedicated clinical practice and community-focused advocacy. Rounding out the group is Me Jean Baptiste Brown, an emeritus attorney with 46 years of standing at the Haitian bar and former Minister of Justice and Public Security, who was awarded the title *Humanitatis e Iustitiae Magister* in recognition of his decades-long career dedicated to upholding the rule of law, advancing equitable justice, and centering humanist values in public service. Haiti’s Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) issued an official statement extending its warmest congratulations to all four recipients, noting that their global recognition serves as a tremendous source of national pride, and that their collective work is elevating the global profile of Haitian knowledge, cultural heritage, and shared values.
