Maya Air Takes Over Punta Gorda Flights

In a last-minute reprieve for Belize’s Toledo District, which was on the verge of losing its only regular commercial air connection, local carrier Maya Island Air has officially taken over scheduled flight services to Punta Gorda, effective immediately ahead of the November 1 termination date previously set by long-time operator Tropic Air. The disruption was first triggered last month when Tropic Air, which had operated the Punta Gorda route for over 20 consecutive years, announced it would cease all scheduled services to the destination, citing sustained unprofitability that made the route unsustainable for its operations. According to Belize Prime Minister John Briceño, the carrier’s announcement was delivered without any advance consultation or warning to the national government, leaving local authorities scrambling to secure an alternative air link for the remote southern district, which relies heavily on air access for both resident mobility and tourism flows. While Briceño noted that Tropic Air’s financial struggles with the route were understandable, he expressed disappointment that the airline’s leadership had not initiated earlier discussions with policymakers to explore potential mitigation measures before issuing the public cancellation notice. To formalize the new arrangement with Maya Island Air, the government has committed to providing duty-free diesel allocations to the carrier, a targeted support measure that stops short of direct cash subsidies to keep the route financially viable for the new operator. Briceño confirmed that tickets for the new Punta Gorda services are already available for purchase online, reassuring both local residents and inbound tourists that reliable air access to the southern region will continue uninterrupted. The eleventh-hour agreement eliminates the looming threat of a total air service shutdown that would have severely disrupted travel, supply chains, and the local tourism economy in Toledo, a remote district that has limited road connectivity to Belize’s more populated northern hubs.
