On October 29, local authorities in Suriname announced that official preparatory work is underway to roll out a fully digital mining cadaster system, a core initiative under the ongoing Suriname Competitiveness and Sector Diversification (SCSD) project. The new digital platform is designed to replace the country’s longstanding largely paper-based mining rights record-keeping framework, centralizing all registration, tracking, and management of mining entitlements in a unified, easily accessible digital database.
Once fully deployed, the system will allow all mining permit applications to be submitted, processed, and monitored entirely online, eliminating the inefficiencies and information gaps that have plagued the previous manual administrative process. Stakeholders note that the centralized digital cadaster will make it far simpler for regulators, industry operators, and applicants to verify which mining rights have already been issued, the exact geographic boundaries of each permitted concession, and the real-time status of every active permit or pending application.
A reliable, transparent mining record system is widely recognized as a foundational pillar for the healthy, sustainable operation of Suriname’s mining sector: it will not only give government regulators far clearer, more comprehensive oversight of all allocated mining entitlements, but also eliminate unnecessary ambiguity for applicants, who will be able to track every stage of their permit submission in real time. The development team is currently building the core digital cadaster tool, which will be configured to integrate data streams from multiple relevant government sources to reduce administrative errors and prevent conflicting or overlapping claims to mining areas.
This digitalization drive forms part of a broader government effort to modernize mining administrative workflows and strengthen the institutional capacity of public agencies overseeing the mining industry under the SCSD project. Officials have not yet released a formal public timeline for when the digital mining cadaster will be fully operational for public use.
