Dominica to host first National Schools’ Awards ceremony recognizing students and school

Dominica’s Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence is rolling out a landmark new initiative to honor educational success, with its very first standalone National Schools’ Awards Ceremony set to take place on Monday, October 26, 2026, starting at 2:00 PM at the St. Alphonsus Parish Hall. This invitation-only event will gather a curated group of guests to pay tribute to standout students and educational institutions for their exceptional feats across the full 2025–2026 academic year. For years prior, high-achieving students in Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) assessments, top individual subject performers, top scorers in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) were recognized as part of the annual National Youth Rally. This year, the Ministry has opted to separate these academic honors into their own dedicated, focused event, while significantly expanding the scope of eligible achievements far beyond traditional exam outcomes. Newly added student recognition categories include top performers in the Grade Six National Assessment, creating a pathway to celebrate younger learners who previously did not receive national-level formal acknowledgment. Schools will also be eligible for awards spanning a diverse range of non-academic domains: Performing Arts, Modern Languages promotion, Agricultural education programming, Community Service impact, cultural preservation efforts, 4-H club leadership, Pastoral Care provision, School Safety standards, and institutional Innovation and Creativity. Additional special honors will be granted to campuses that foster the most dynamic, engaged social and sports club ecosystems for their student bodies. Ministry officials emphasized that these expanded award categories are intentionally designed to elevate the critical role of extracurricular and community-focused activities in nurturing students’ unique talents, leadership acumen, collaborative teamwork skills, and long-term physical wellness. The new awards framework embodies the government’s core educational philosophy that true academic success cannot be reduced to standardized test scores alone. A well-rounded, high-quality education prioritizes character building, creative problem-solving, cultural literacy, active community contribution, and the creation of safe, nurturing campus spaces where every learner can reach their full potential. Education leaders have outlined that the new awards program is crafted not only to celebrate past achievements but also to motivate students, teaching staff, school administrators, and all cross-sector education stakeholders to keep raising standards across Dominica’s entire national education system. The Ministry has extended pre-emptive congratulations to every student, school, and education stakeholder whose contributions will be highlighted during the ceremony, and expressed deep gratitude for their ongoing dedication to advancing the quality and accessibility of education across the island nation. As an invitation-only gathering, the event is not open to members of the general public, a structure the Ministry says will allow for a more intimate, focused celebration centered on the honorees themselves.
