Two promising cricketing talents from Saint Lucia have landed coveted spots on the West Indies A roster for an upcoming home limited-overs series against England A, putting them within striking distance of a long-awaited call-up to the senior West Indies men’s international side. All-rounder Shadrack Descarte and pace bowler Keon Gaston were officially named to the combined T20 and 50-over squads this past Sunday, ahead of an eight-match regional contest scheduled to kick off next month across host venues in St Kitts and Nevis. Hailing from the same Mon Repos community in Saint Lucia, both athletes have deep roots in local high-performance development pathways: they are either current or past participants in the Saint Lucia Cricket High Performance Centre program, and have both previously represented the Saint Lucia Kings franchise in the Caribbean Premier League. Prior to this selection, their highest level of regional competitive cricket came with the Windward Islands provincial side, but they now have a high-stakes platform to showcase their skills directly to Ottis Gibson, the West Indies A head coach who also serves as the senior men’s team’s fast-bowling specialist consultant. In an official public statement, Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that the 50-over segment of the squad was curated specifically with two key milestones on the organization’s roadmap front of mind: the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier slated for February 2025, and the full 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup scheduled for October of that year. The 29-year-old Descarte, who recently celebrated his birthday, is currently plying his trade in the Canada Premier League, a career milestone that underscores his rapidly rising profile as a versatile white-ball contributor. The left-handed middle-order batter, who also bowls right-arm medium pace, made his List A competitive debut in late 2022, before earning spots with the Saint Lucia Kings CPL roster in 2023 and the Windward Islands first-class setup in 2024. To date, his white-ball track record includes 18 wickets across 17 List A appearances at an economical average of 22.61, alongside consistent runs in the middle order highlighted by a career top score of 60. The 23-year-old Gaston, a raw, dynamic right-arm fast bowler, exploded onto the regional first-class scene last year with a stunning 7-wicket haul for 78 runs on his debut for the Windward Islands against Barbados. His exceptional natural pace and surprising level of control for a young fast bowler have already yielded five wickets across nine CPL appearances for the Saint Lucia Kings. The upcoming series will open with three T20 clashes between West Indies A and England A, running from November 1 to 4 at the Conaree Cricket Ground, where both Descarte and Gaston will take the field under the leadership of captain Alick Athanaze, a fellow Windward Islands representative. Following the T20 leg, Descarte will remain on the roster for five subsequent 50-over matches, to be hosted across Warner Park and Conaree, with Keacy Carty stepping in as captain for that segment. CWI leadership has explicitly framed the entire series as a formal talent audition exclusively for players who are not currently part of the senior men’s international setup. For Descarte and Gaston, this high-profile opportunity could pave their path to join fellow Saint Lucian Ackeem Auguste in the senior West Indies squad, following in the legendary footsteps of iconic local cricketing greats including Daren Sammy, Gairy Mathurin, and Johnson Charles.
