A devastating blaze has swept through a large rice processing mill located on Fredericiweg in Suriname’s Nickerie District, leaving a substantial portion of the industrial facility completely destroyed. Local authorities and emergency responders confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, a rare positive outcome amid the extensive material destruction.
The mill was housed in a large wooden structure spanning an estimated 35 by 80 meters. Fire damage was concentrated most heavily in the rear section of the building, a 20-by-30-meter zone that housed the facility’s core processing equipment including the rice hulling mills. This entire area was reduced to charred rubble by the rapidly spreading fire.
Preliminary investigations into the origin of the blaze point to an adjacent work activity as the source. According to early information obtained from local sources, workers from a separate company were conducting controlled burning of rice husk residue near the site when embers spread unexpectedly to the rice mill’s property, igniting the structure. The spread of the fire was accelerated by the building’s all-wood construction, allowing flames to engulf the rear section quickly before firefighters could fully contain the blaze.
Preliminary estimates place total material damage at several million Surinamese dollars, a major financial blow to the mill’s owners. Compounding the heavy losses, the facility was connected to the local power grid but carried no insurance coverage for fire damage, meaning the entire cost of reconstruction and equipment replacement will fall to the business owners.
Local law enforcement authorities have now activated the Forensic Investigation unit of Nickerie to launch a full technical investigation into the fire. Investigators will examine the fire site to confirm the official cause of the blaze, verify the extent of damage, and document the exact circumstances that led to the unexpected spread of the fire from the controlled burn area.
