At 31, Jurgen Montoute is set to become Gros Islet’s next mayor

A new chapter in local governance for Saint Lucia’s Gros Islet constituency is set to begin, following the official announcement that 31-year-old Jurgen Montoute has been selected as the district’s next mayor. The confirmation came via an early Wednesday social media statement from Kenson Casimir, the sitting Member of Parliament for Gros Islet.

Born and raised on Marie Therese Street in the constituency, Montoute will make history when he takes office as the youngest mayor in the country’s history. He will be sworn in alongside a newly elected constituency council during a formal ceremony scheduled for next week. News of the appointment quickly spread across local social platforms, drawing an immediate flood of congratulatory messages from community members, political peers, and residents across the island.

Montoute subsequently shared his own reaction to the appointment in a public social media post, opening with an expression of deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community that raised him. “Truly humbled for the opportunity to serve the town and constituency that has shaped who I am today,” he wrote. The incoming mayor also stressed his commitment to collaborative governance, noting he is eager to work alongside fellow council members, constituency staff, and MP Casimir to advance the interests of all communities within Gros Islet. “I look forward to collaborating… as we strive for excellence in service to the constituency of Gros Islet and each of its communities,” he added.

Montoute comes from a family with deep roots in Saint Lucian local politics: he is the son of Lenard “Spider” Montoute, a former parliamentary representative for the Gros Islet constituency. The elder Montoute held the seat for the United Workers Party across two terms, first from 2006 to 2011, and again from 2016 to 2021.

Before entering local politics, Montoute built a robust career in finance and economic development across both private and public sector institutions in the region. Per his public LinkedIn profile, his previous roles include positions as a finance analyst and senior analyst at global investment banking giant Goldman Sachs, an investment services officer at Invest Saint Lucia, the country’s national investment promotion agency, and a fund manager at the Bank of Saint Lucia. This extensive professional background is expected to inform his policy priorities as mayor, particularly around economic development and local financial management for the Gros Islet area.
