Authorities in Guyana have confirmed the arrest of a key individual linked to an armed robbery that targeted a local businessman in the Berbice region over the weekend. The incident took place last Saturday in Number 2 village, East Canje, where the 57-year-old business owner was robbed, according to initial police reports.
The 27-year-old prime suspect, a food vendor who resides in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was taken into custody just one day after the crime, at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the arrest followed actionable intelligence gathered by investigating officers, who immediately launched a search to recover stolen assets and evidence connected to the robbery.
During the search operation, investigators recovered 500,000 Guyanese dollars in stolen cash, as well as a motor vehicle that is believed to have served as the robbers’ getaway car. A further inspection of the vehicle uncovered a .32 caliber revolver loaded with two live rounds of ammunition; one additional bullet was also seized separately as evidence.
All recovered items—including the firearm, ammunition, stolen cash, and the suspect’s vehicle—have been placed into police custody as the official investigation moves forward. The prime suspect remains behind bars, and law enforcement teams are currently working to track down additional co-conspirators who are suspected to have participated in the armed robbery.
