Dominican Gold Medalist Thea Lafond receives honorary UWI doctorate from UWI Five Islands Campus

Dominica’s trailblazing Olympic athlete Thea LaFond-Gadson has added another prestigious accolade to her growing collection of honors, after being granted an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by The University of the West Indies (UWI). The award recognizes her remarkable contributions to the advancement of sport in the Caribbean and her role as an inspiration to emerging athletes across the region.

LaFond-Gadson is one of just 13 distinguished individuals selected to receive honorary graduand status from UWI for 2026, a designation that was formally approved by the UWI Council. This year’s cohort of honorees spans a diverse range of sectors, with recipients celebrated for exceptional achievements in fields as varied as journalism, diplomacy, medicine, agriculture, law, public service, culture, music, and sport. Inclusion in this select group underscores the widespread impact of LaFond-Gadson’s work beyond athletic competition.

The honorary doctorate is the latest in a string of national and international recognitions that have followed LaFond-Gadson’s ground-breaking performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. At the event, she made global sporting history by claiming the first-ever Olympic medal for Dominica, a feat that elevated her home nation’s profile on the world stage and cemented her legacy as a pioneer for Caribbean sport.
