Suriname’s Ministry of Regional Development (RO) is pursuing a strategic shift to leverage international city partnerships as a core tool for driving trade, foreign investment and local entrepreneurship to the country’s interior districts, following a high-level participation in a leading inter-American local governance conference held in Miami.
A four-member Surinamese delegation took part in the 28th Inter-American Conference of Mayors and Local Authorities, which ran from September 29 to 30 in Miami, Florida. This year’s gathering, themed “Governance in Transition: Cities Leading in a New Global Era,” gathered hundreds of local government leaders and public sector representatives from across Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss pressing shared priorities for regional urban and local development.
Conference agenda items covered a wide range of critical topics, from digital transformation and inclusive economic growth to large-scale infrastructure investment – including upgrades for ports and airports – as well as cross-border collaboration and innovation in local governance.
District Commissioner Wennys Vijfhoven of Paramaribo-Zouth represented Suriname on a dedicated policy panel focused on reimagining sister city networks to deliver measurable economic impact. The panel centered its discussion on how traditional, largely ceremonial sister city relationships can be restructured into dynamic, mutually beneficial cooperation frameworks that generate tangible economic gains for local communities.
Panel discussions explored expanded collaboration across high-priority sectors: cross-border trade, direct foreign investment, educational exchanges, and small and medium enterprise support. Speaking during the panel, the Surinamese delegation emphasized that international city partnerships should move beyond symbolic exchanges and cultural contacts to deliver concrete, lasting benefits for local communities across Suriname’s districts and advance broad-based national economic development.
In addition to Vijfhoven, the Surinamese delegation included Ruchsana Ilahibaks, District Commissioner of Paramaribo-Midden, Marlon Budike, District Commissioner of Paramaribo-Centrum, and Simone Kompa-Sakia, head of the Ministry of Regional Development’s International Relations division.
As of the conference’s conclusion, no new concrete investment projects or formal sister city agreements have been publicly announced by the RO. Ministry officials noted that the primary goals of the delegation’s participation were to exchange knowledge and best practices with regional peers, build new professional connections, and assess potential opportunities for future cooperative frameworks that support Suriname’s local development priorities.
